Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 vs Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R

The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 and Cup 2 R sit close together in Michelin's trackday-and-competition lineup, but the shared test data shows they're aimed at two different priorities: the Cup 2 R chasing outright dry lap time, and the Cup 2 balancing speed with broader usability (especially when conditions or stint length aren't ideal).

Across three independent comparisons (2020, 2024 and 2026), the pattern is remarkably consistent: Cup 2 R repeatedly delivers shorter dry braking and faster dry handling, while the standard Cup 2 is more forgiving in the wet and, depending on the test/car/setup, can be easier to live with over longer running. The “which is better” answer depends less on headline pace and more on your trackday reality-weather risk, number of hot laps per stint, and budget.

The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R have an equal number of test wins. However, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Stronger wet safety margin overall: wins wet braking in 2/3 shared tests (including 47.0 m vs 55.5 m in 2026) and wet handling in 2/3 tests (2020 and 2024)
  • More forgiving, confidence-inspiring balance noted in 2024 testing (progressive breakaway, neutral feel)
  • Can match or beat Cup 2 R on longer-run pace in some scenarios (2026 long run: 155.6 s vs 157.27 s)
  • Better value positioning in the 2026 test context (noted as the cheapest option and a sensible entry point for occasional track use)
  • Dominant dry braking across all shared tests (3/3 wins), with large real-world gaps (up to ~13.5% shorter in 2020)
  • Consistently quicker in dry handling (3/3 wins), indicating higher peak dry grip and sharper response
  • Stronger single-lap/peak performance character highlighted in 2024 (very precise turn-in, strong feedback, fastest when “on it”)
  • Light weight noted in professional testing (helps response and transient behaviour; 2026 called out as lightest set at 47.8 kg)

In the dry probably the best tyre I have ever had, but for maximum grip it needs to be hot. Have them on Megane rs250 in 235/35/19 and 235/40/18. On wet drive normally and no problems. Be aware of aquaplaning.

Best Review for the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R
Given 89% 305/35 R20 W on a combination of roads for 5,000 spirited miles
Cup2R takes everything great about the Cup2 and makes it better for the purpose you buy them for, extracting the performance out your car.

Make no mistake, this is a DRY day tyre, if you are using them in damp to wet conditions then extra caution is advised. It isn't the worst wet tyre I've ever driven in that it wont try to kill you if someone sneezes on the road 100 yards ahead, but the extremely shallow and narrow tread pattern lend no help in water dissipation and drivers need to be aware of this.

So onto the good, and, oh boy are these good.

Conclusion

If your goal is maximum dry performance per lap, the Cup 2 R is the clear technical winner. It won dry braking in every shared test, cutting stopping distances by meaningful margins (e.g., 30.9 m vs 27.2 m in 2024, and 50.33 m vs 43.55 m in 2020), and it was also quicker in dry handling each time (e.g., 141.39 s vs 139.33 s in 2024). That translates directly into later braking points and higher entry speed-real advantages for time attack, qualifying-style laps, or short stints when you can keep the tyre in its ideal window.

But the Cup 2's advantage is that it's the more complete trackday tyre when you add wet safety margin and consistency into the equation. It beat the Cup 2 R in wet braking in 2 of 3 tests (including a huge 47.0 m vs 55.5 m gap in 2026, +15.3% for Cup 2) and in wet handling in 2 of 3 tests (e.g., 2020: 104.77 s vs 113.3 s). In the 2026 AutoBild track day test, both tyres were criticised for pick-up and drop-off over a stint, but Cup 2 R was also singled out as hard to justify on value (most expensive by a wide margin) while not delivering a decisive overall advantage on that specific car (M2) and format.

Practical takeaway: choose Cup 2 R only if you can reliably run mostly-dry sessions and you're buying it for lap time. Choose Cup 2 if you want a tyre that's still very fast, generally less risky when rain appears, and easier to justify for mixed-condition trackdays or drivers who prioritise confidence and breadth of ability over the last few tenths.
Key Differences
  • Dry performance is decisively Cup 2 R: it wins dry braking and dry handling in all shared tests (e.g., 2024 dry braking 27.2 m vs 30.9 m; 2020 dry handling 71.8 s vs 73.1 s)
  • Wet performance generally favours Cup 2: it wins wet braking and wet handling in 2 of 3 shared tests, including a major wet braking advantage in 2026 (47.0 m vs 55.5 m)
  • Consistency vs peak: Cup 2 R is repeatedly described as a peak-lap tyre (2024: “only for one lap”), whereas Cup 2 is positioned as more rounded and predictable
  • Long-run results are mixed, but the 2026 professional notes criticise both tyres for pick-up/degradation; Cup 2 R's long-run drop-off is specifically called its weakest area there
  • Car/setup sensitivity: 2026 notes the Cup 2 R (developed for M4 CSL) didn't feel fully at home on the M2, with occasional understeer at the limit-suggesting the R can be more sensitive to platform and conditions
  • Value proposition: Cup 2 R is repeatedly flagged as very expensive (2026: most expensive by a wide margin, >2000 euros/set) while Cup 2 is framed as the cheaper, more justifiable trackday baseline

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
