The General Grabber APT offered a useful road and off-road compromise in two Tyre Reviews comparisons of different tyre types, rather than broad fields of direct rivals. In the 2019 HT vs AT vs MT test it finished second of four overall. Its 100.84-second dry handling lap essentially matched the highway tyre, and dry braking ranked second of four at 47.9 metres. The testers also found comfort close to the road tyre, while dirt, gravel and mud traction improved over that tyre. This supported their recommendation for a roughly 70% road and 30% off-road driving mix.
Wet performance was the main road compromise in 2019: wet braking was 8.3% behind the best and wet handling 3.6% behind, with a looser rear end on gravel also noted. In the 2020 HT vs AT vs MT vs Winter snow comparison it finished second of five overall, but that did not mean equally strong results throughout. Snow traction was joint second and ice braking second, while snow braking was fourth of five, 10.4% behind the best. Turning and braking on the snow handling lap were limited beside the highway and winter tyres. These comparisons show the trade-offs between tyre types, not a general ranking against other mild all-terrain models.
Strong = top two of the field in that measurement. Weak = bottom two.
The Grabber APT had good traction levels, but during the snow handling test the braking and turning was limited when compared to the HTS60 and the full winter tyre.
The Grabber APT finished second and was the best compromise in the test. On the road it gave up surprisingly little, essentially matching the highway tyre in dry handling and comfort, while it was quicker on dirt and gravel and found more traction in mud. Its weak point is wet braking. If you split your time roughly 70% on road and 30% off road, a mild all terrain like this is the one I would choose.
