The Sumitomo HTR Z5 has a mixed braking record and generally weak handling results in its fuller comparison. It finished ninth of ten in Tire Rack's 2025 UUHP summer test, where responsive steering and a balanced feel were positives but the testers found limited traction. Dry braking was ninth of ten, 11% behind the best, and the dry lap was also ninth, with a lap time 4.8% longer than the fastest. Its second place on the dry circle was an unusual contrast with those weaker dry results, suggesting that the sustained cornering result did not translate into a competitive lap or stopping distance.
Wet braking was a relative bright spot at fifth of ten in the same test, 5.8% behind the best, yet wet handling was ninth and its lap time 8.7% longer than the fastest. The testers described an agile tyre with too narrow a grip window for confident faster driving. Auto Bild's 2023 summer market overview placed it 27th of 50 overall, with dry braking 28th of 48 and 9% behind the best, and wet braking 23rd of 48 with a 16.5% gap. Together, the results support its steering feel more than its outright grip, with braking closer to midfield than its 2025 handling performance.
