2022/23 Tyre Reviews Studless Winter Tyre Test P5 of 7

The Yokohama Iceguard IG53 peaked in snow braking where it had a surprise win, but that was the only standout result. It had the longest braking in the wet and dry, it was mid pack on ice and has the noisiest tyre on test. It did however have one of the lowest rolling resistances on test. A tire like this is certainly a better buy than a tire like the Federal, but it still sits behind the rest of the group.

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 1 tests. Updated October 28, 2026.

The Yokohama iceGUARD iG53 finished fifth of seven overall in the 2022/23 Tyre Reviews Studless Winter Tyre Test. Snow braking was its standout result, with the shortest stop at 15.37 metres, ranked first of nine measured entries. Rolling resistance was another positive, third of nine at 7.5 kg/t, and subjective comfort ranked first of eight. The testers also considered aquaplaning resistance good and ice traction reasonable, though they described overall ice performance as average. The strong snow stop did not extend to equally strong snow cornering.

Wet-road stopping and handling were the main limitations. It needed 38.72 metres to stop in the wet and 49.49 metres in the dry, the longest distances in the measured field, while wet handling was difficult and the subjective score ranked last of eight. It was also the noisiest measured tyre despite its good comfort score. This single comparison therefore shows a particular snow-braking strength, low rolling resistance and a comfortable ride, with less reassuring wet-road behaviour and limited refinement. Its average ice assessment does not support treating that snow-braking result as a general winter-performance advantage.
