Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 vs Vredestein Wintrac Pro plus

This head-to-head pits two very different winter tyres against each other: Pirelli's Cinturato Winter 2, a premium-touring option targeted at everyday drivers, versus Vredestein's Wintrac Pro+, an ultra-high-performance winter tyre aimed at sportier cars. Across four shared tests in 17-18-inch sizes, both score well, but they take different routes to winter competence.

The Pirelli consistently impresses in braking, efficiency, and longevity, topping dry braking in all comparable tests and showing strong wet safety with short stops and secure aquaplaning behavior. The Vredestein counters with more engaging subjective feel, higher wet cornering poise in two tests, and balanced all-round dynamics, but it gives up measurable stopping distance on dry roads and often trails the Pirelli in wear and economy. Pricing context matters too: the Pirelli is typically pricier per set, while the Vredestein undercuts it slightly, framing a classic trade-off between hard safety metrics and driving feel/value.

The Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 and Vredestein Wintrac Pro plus have an equal number of test wins. However, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Class-leading dry braking across shared tests
  • Consistently short wet braking with strong aquaplaning safety
  • Lower rolling resistance and noticeably better projected wear
  • Quieter, more comfortable ride in multiple evaluations
  • Engaging, precise handling with strong subjective wet/dry feedback
  • Competitive wet cornering and straight-line aquaplaning in two tests
  • Solid snow traction performance
  • Good comfort scores and generally attractive pricing versus Pirelli

Best Review for the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2
Given 86% 225/40 R18 on a combination of roads for 4,000 average miles
I bought this tyre last year after suggestions from my tyre dealer. I was looking for a good tyre for cold and rainy winters with some occasional trip to the mountains. These tyres were highly satisfactory in terms of dry and wet performance, plus they felt great in terms of subjective road feedback and handling. Car seems attached to the ground in all situations. Downsides are higher noise and fuel consumption, but I say this with respect to my summer tyres, which may not be a fair comparison. I only tried them on snow once and they were fine.

Conclusion

Synthesis across the tests shows a clear pattern: if you prioritize measurable safety margins and ownership costs, the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 has the edge. It wins all shared dry braking trials, frequently stops shorter in the wet, resists aquaplaning well, and posts notably better predicted wear and lower rolling resistance. Those are high-impact differences in real-world commuting and mixed-weather motorway use.

The Vredestein Wintrac Pro+ earns its keep with more precise, confidence-inspiring dynamics in both wet and dry handling assessments, plus solid snow traction and comfort scores. However, its longer dry braking and average wear reduce its overall safety/value proposition for many drivers. Choose the Pirelli for safety-first daily driving in mild-to-wet winters and long-mileage value; pick the Vredestein if you want a sportier feel and stronger subjective feedback in changeable conditions, and you're willing to accept some braking and wear compromises.
Key Differences
  • Dry safety: Pirelli stops shorter in every shared dry braking test (e.g., 44.1 m vs 46.9 m in 225/40 R18).
  • Wet stopping: Pirelli often brakes shorter in the wet; Vredestein occasionally counters in specific sizes/tests.
  • Aquaplaning: Marginal edge to Pirelli in curved; Vredestein edges straight-line in two tests.
  • Handling feel: Vredestein scores higher subjectively in wet/dry handling; Pirelli feels more subdued.
  • Snow profile: Pirelli better in snow braking/handling in two tests; Vredestein stronger in snow traction and circle once.
  • Ownership costs: Pirelli shows better wear (+28% in one test) and lower rolling resistance; Vredestein typically cheaper to buy.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
