Continental WinterContact TS 870 P vs Vredestein Wintrac Pro plus

This head-to-head pits two ultra-high-performance winter tyres aimed at fast passenger cars: Continental's WinterContact TS 870 P versus Vredestein's Wintrac Pro+. Across six shared 2025 tests in sizes from 215/55 R17 to 245/45 R19, the Continental consistently finishes higher, taking every overall comparison. The data paints a clear picture of a balanced, safety-first tyre with standout efficiency and longevity versus a value-leaning rival that shines mainly in select wet dynamics.

Expect the TS 870 P to deliver shorter stops in dry, wet, and snow, notably stronger aquaplaning protection in several tests, and markedly lower rolling resistance and wear. The Wintrac Pro+ counters with competitive wet handling/lateral grip and better ride comfort in some tests, but it trails in braking security and efficiency, and shows higher wear.

Test Results

Independent comparison tyre tests are the best source of data to get tyre information from, and the good news is there have been six tests which compare both tyres directly!

Summary of six total tests comparing both tyres directly
TyreTest WinsPerformance
Continental WinterContact TS 870 Psix
six wins

While it might look like the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is better than the Vredestein Wintrac Pro plus purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Consistently shorter braking in dry, wet, and snow across most tests (e.g., wet 31.2 m vs 31.9 m; dry −6-8%)
  • Excellent aquaplaning security in several tests and stable wet handling with clear feedback
  • Low rolling resistance (often −12-19%) and notably longer projected mileage (+24-30%)
  • Balanced, predictable handling with strong subjective scores and low noise
  • Strong wet lateral grip and handling in several tests (wins in wet handling/circle on multiple occasions)
  • Good straight and curved aquaplaning performance in some sizes
  • Comfort advantage in select evaluations (higher comfort scores in a few tests)
  • Attractive purchase price versus top-tier competitors

Best Review for the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P

Tire size: 225/55 R 17 101V, Car: Audi A6 C7 3.0 TFSI Quattro. I bought these tires after watching Tyrereviews winter tire test. After switching from old Michelin Alpin 4, the first thing I've noticed was... silence. The gap was huge. These tires are quieter than my summer tires- Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (245/45 R18 99Y). I've tested them in almost every weather conditions. They are great. The bigest disadvantage is maybe snow grip- good but not exceptional (new winter tires are better in mild climate), but they saved me 2-3 times during winter skidding :). Definitely worh to buy, especially... Continue reading this review using the link below

Conclusion

Synthesis across the six tests is decisive: the WinterContact TS 870 P is the more complete winter UHP tyre. It wins braking in dry (e.g., −6-8% vs Vredestein), wet (typically −1-2%, with larger gaps in some tests), and snow (often −2-3%), pairs this with best-in-test aquaplaning resistance in key outings, and adds meaningful ownership upside through lower rolling resistance (often −12-19%) and substantially longer projected mileage (e.g., +24-30%). Handling feel is consistently precise, with strong subjective scores in dry and wet.

The Wintrac Pro+ is viable for drivers prioritizing wet cornering feel and comfort at a lower upfront price, evidenced by several wins in wet handling/circle and straight/curved aquaplaning in specific tests. However, its longer dry and snow braking, occasionally extended wet braking, higher rolling resistance, and higher abrasion weaken its safety margin and cost-of-ownership case. In short: choose the Continental for all-round winter safety and efficiency; consider the Vredestein if you value wet dynamics and comfort in milder, rain-heavy winters and accept the trade-offs.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Continental wins all six shared tests; Vredestein has no overall wins
  • Braking security: Continental generally shorter in dry, wet, and snow (often 1-8% gains)
  • Aquaplaning: Continental leads in key tests; Vredestein posts some wins in other sizes
  • Efficiency: Continental has markedly lower rolling resistance (up to ~19%)
  • Longevity: Continental shows lower wear/higher mileage (+24-30% km projections)
  • Comfort and wet dynamics: Vredestein can feel plusher and shows strong wet cornering in some tests but with longer braking

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
