Continental WinterContact TS 870 P vs Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3

Two of Europe's headline UHP winter tyres go head-to-head: Continental's WinterContact TS 870 P and Goodyear's UltraGrip Performance 3. Across 19 shared tests, both target fast passenger cars and mixed winter climates, but they take different routes to safety: Continental leans on low rolling resistance and precise, confidence-building behavior, while Goodyear chases outright grip-especially on wet roads and snow.

The data shows a consistent pattern. Goodyear is the wet and snow specialist, taking 14 overall test wins to Continental's 4, with repeated advantages in wet braking/handling and snow traction. Continental counters with class-leading efficiency, strong dry performance, and excellent straight/curved aquaplaning in several tests. Comfort and longevity tilt toward Goodyear, while operating efficiency and EV-friendliness favor Continental.

While it might look like the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 is better than the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Exceptionally low rolling resistance (frequent test leader; EV-friendly and fuel-saving)
  • Strong aquaplaning protection and stable high-speed security (multiple straight/curved wins)
  • Confident, precise dry braking/handling (several category wins and test victories)
  • Balanced comfort with competitive noise and good overall refinement
  • Outstanding wet braking and handling (dominant across multiple tests and temperatures)
  • Superior snow traction and consistent winter grip (frequent wins in traction/handling)
  • High projected mileage and better value indices in major tests (ADAC, Autobild)
  • Refined comfort and noise, with stable, predictable behavior across conditions

Dry Braking

Looking at data from sixteen tyre tests, the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P was better during seven dry braking tests. On average the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P stopped the vehicle in 0.23% less distance than the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3.

Tire size: 225/55 R 17 101V, Car: Audi A6 C7 3.0 TFSI Quattro. I bought these tires after watching Tyrereviews winter tire test. After switching from old Michelin Alpin 4, the first thing I've noticed was... silence. The gap was huge. These tires are quieter than my summer tires- Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (245/45 R18 99Y). I've tested them in almost every weather conditions. They are great. The bigest disadvantage is maybe snow grip- good but not exceptional (new winter tires are better in mild climate), but they saved me 2-3 times during winter skidding :). Definitely worh to buy, especially... Continue reading this review using the link below

So far, amazing tire. One of the best ever made. It grips and it handles so much better than the eagle f1 asymmetric6, the previously fitted on this car, and the wintercontact ts 850 p on another. And the comfort, its like the car is floating. Not cheap though.

Conclusion

If your winter is predominantly wet with regular snowfalls, the UltraGrip Performance 3 is the safer, more rounded bet. It repeatedly stops shorter in the wet (e.g., −5.9% in AZ 2025; −3.9% in ADAC 2025) and accelerates/brakes better on snow in most programs, while also delivering strong stability and notably higher projected mileage and value scores.

Choose the WinterContact TS 870 P if you prioritize efficiency and crisp road feel. It posts the lowest rolling resistance by margins often exceeding 10%, leads or matches in aquaplaning protection in many tests, and is very secure on dry roads with short braking (e.g., Autobild SUV 2025 dry −2.9%). Its main compromise is occasionally weaker wet braking and only mid-pack snow/ice performance versus the best. In short: Goodyear for wet/snow safety and longevity; Continental for efficiency, aquaplaning security, and precise dry behavior.
Key Differences
  • Goodyear dominates wet grip: repeated shorter wet braking and faster wet handling laps
  • Goodyear typically stronger on snow (traction/handling), while Continental is more average on snow
  • Continental leads rolling resistance by a clear margin, benefiting fuel/EV range
  • Continental often excels in aquaplaning resistance; Goodyear occasionally trails in curved aqua
  • Goodyear usually offers longer wear and better value; Continental tends to be pricier
  • Dry performance is closely matched, but Continental more often edges dry braking; Goodyear sometimes feels sportier subjectively

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
