Following on from the massive 54 winter tyre shootout in the popular 225/45 R18 size using a BMW 3 Series, Autobild have taken the top 20 tyres through to their full testing program to to work out exactly what tyre is best overall.
As always, the Autobild tests are amongst the best in the industry, so enjoy all the below data!
The Continental WinterContact TS 870 P and the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 are notable for their secure handling and sharp steering on dry tracks, garnering most points in the tests. In contrast, the dry handling of the Winterhawk 4 by Firestone is considered problematic.

Wet
In the wet tests the BMW Series 3 demands high dynamic performance from its tyres. It's surprising to note that the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 not only meets these demands but also outperforms the standard summer tyres, especially in braking and on wet handling tracks.
However, the Toyo Observe 944 struggles in wet conditions due to its inconsistent lateral control. Similarly, both the Speed-Grip 5 by Semperit and a non-branded budget tyre tested for reference display unstable rear axles, making them less than ideal choices. When assessing aquaplaning risks, Hankook's balanced Winter i*cept evo³ offers the most reliable safety margins.

Snow
The French tyre manufacturer, Michelin, along with its secondary brands BF Goodrich and Kleber, leads the performance ratings on snow. Specifically, the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 showcases top-tier results in traction tests, snow braking, and handling assessments. However, there's a minor drawback: when considering lateral (side-to-side) control, some of Michelin's own cost-effective options marginally outperform it.
Most competitors in the study also exhibit commendable winter performance. One exception worth noting is the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005. In slalom evaluations, it demonstrated deficiencies. The tyre exhibited a delayed response in steering commands and a propensity to push forward during turns, indicating suboptimal lateral control. Similarly, the Falken Eurowinter HS02 Pro, along with a budget tyre tested for comparison, displayed inadequate curve stability in snowy conditions.

Value
In the cost analysis, the anticipated kilometre lifespan greatly influences the chapter rating. Goodyear's UltraGrip Performance 3 achieves the best performance with 45,500 kilometres, calculated for the driven axle. Considering the value for money, the Polaris 5 from Barum ranks first due to its good lifespan and low cost. Additionally, it excels in rolling resistance.
