Firestone Winterhawk 4

The Firestone Winterhawk 4 is a winter touring tyre that feels particularly at home in wet, slushy conditions, combining strong wet braking with reassuring aquaplaning resistance. Real-world drivers praise its confidence in snow and rain, quiet comfort and strong value versus pricier premium rivals. Independent testing broadly supports the wet-weather strengths, but also shows a clear trade-off in dry braking and dry handling that can pull overall results down.

Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tyre tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

The Firestone Winterhawk 4, as Bridgestone's budget brand, positions itself as a snow specialist with very high traction on snow-covered surfaces, making it confident and reassuring when winter conditions are at their worst. It also delivers respectable performance on wet roads, maintaining acceptable safety margins. However, the tyre shows its budget orientation and snow-focused design through spongy, imprecise handling on dry pavement, where the soft compound and flexible tread blocks compromise steering response and cornering stability. Extended dry braking distances also raise some safety concerns. At approximately €450 per set, it's positioned in the mid-range price bracket, though the handling compromises make competitors at similar prices more appealing for balanced performance. The Firestone is best suited for drivers in consistently snowy climates who prioritize winter grip and can tolerate vague dry handling, particularly those who drive conservatively and value the Bridgestone connection for quality assurance.

The Firestone Winterhawk 4 receives only adequate ratings on dry roads and narrowly misses satisfactory on wet surfaces, but achieves good winter performance, though overall driving safety is rated as adequate due to dry road weaknesses. It also misses good environmental ratings, resulting in an adequate overall judgment. On dry roads, it shows poor precision and steering feedback requiring frequent corrections, with oversteering tendencies and adequate limit behavior, plus braking distances that just miss good ratings. On wet surfaces, it narrowly misses good overall ratings despite achieving good braking and longitudinal aquaplaning performance, but only satisfactory lateral aquaplaning and handling due to moderate grip levels. In winter conditions, it clearly earns good ratings across all criteria including snow and ice braking, snow traction, and handling with precise control and sufficient reserves. This Italian-manufactured tyre misses good environmental ratings due to satisfactory predicted mileage, though it shows low tyre wear and good efficiency thanks to low weight and fuel consumption.

Good quality for mid-range brand, cover winter needs. In general there is no high potential of performance for winter tyres independently of brand!

I bought these in 2024 and till the last moment was debating whether to get the Bridgestone Blizzak. Ultimately decided to cheap out 30EUR per tyre and get these as they were presented to me as built where Bridgestone is, the same as Bridgestone when it comes to performance, but cheaper because of the brand.

So I got them mounted and was super happy with them on their first season. Comfortable, super quiet, relatively numb on the steering (normal coming down from Conti Sport Contact 7 I guess) and I would say the only weak point was aquaplaning, but that was something I could live with it and to be honest, all winter tyres suffer here.

However, to my enormous surprise, as soon as I put them back on for their 2nd season and oh was I in for a surprise. As soon as I got up to around 90km/h, the noise in close to untolerable. On top, at around 90km/h I start feeling a slight pulsating vibration, which wasn't there on my way to the tire shop with the summer tyres.
I brought the car back on the next weekend and turns out there is a radial runout on one of the tyres that won't be covered by warranty. About the noise which sounds like I've got a bad wheel bearing, they said is normal for winter tyres....
Just to clarify, I've kept the tyres in an underground parking garage where temperature is between 9 and 15 degrees Celsius, kept them as tyres should be kept when NOT on wheels and rotated them every 30 days, even though this is not strictly necessary.

So pretty dissapointed with them.

I bought 4 brand new tyres in November 2020 and this review is after 3000km. I'm pretty happy with them. The price was pretty good in comparison with Bridgestone and Michelin. Although I try to skip as much icy roads as possible, in rain or snow they perform well. I tried them even in a snowy mountain and everything was alright. Braking path is fairly short no matter the weather. No road noises, good responsiveness and they feel pretty reliable. For a budget tyre, this is a really good value for money.
