Nokian Outpost nAT vs Hakkapeliitta R5 vs WRG4 vs One - 1st of 4 tyres

  • Overall - The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 is totally joyful tyre to drive on snow, and proof that a good winter tyre can make anything fun in the snow as it made the test Toyota Hilux exceptional fun! Compared to the other tyres it just had more grip everywhere, loads of front end grip on turn in, no understeer at all and loads of traction at the rear and when it was sliding it was controllable. This tyre is one of the kings of snow performance, and it shows.

2023 Studless Friction Winter Tyre Test - 3rd of 8 tyres

  • Overall - Nokian's latest friction tire scores the most points of all in the snow and ice rounds. It has lively reactions and steers quickly into curves. For a soft friction tire, it is a joy to drive with a cooperative rear that suits the active driver. Conversely, those who prefer a calm and undramatic tire may find the Nokian somewhat too prone to sliding.

On asphalt, it handles evasive maneuvers well, but has a somewhat nonlinear steering feel. Its wet grip properties are just behind the best competitors, as is the road noise. However, the Hakkapeliitta R5 has low rolling resistance.

The Nokian tire is suitable for those who prioritize winter road properties above all and appreciate its quick cornering characteristics.

Top 3 Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 Reviews

Given 93% while driving a Volvo V60 T6 AWD (205/60 R16) on a combination of roads for 150 average miles
I live in middle-part of Sweden where the weather can be up and down. from practically rainy roads, to dry and out of nowhere snow&ice roads due to weather changes. I went from Studded tires(been using those for 12years now and wanted to switch up and see how it felt to use studless and am I amazed how far the it come? it's just magnificent, less road noise due to not studded but wow the performance is just unpeccable. They saying wet grip is not that good-okey-ish but for me they have been great, snow & ice is just as we all know .."they are hakka" for a reason.

These are incredible tires!! Dead quiet smooth ride, incredible snow handling, and Ice as well. Winters are tough here in Maine...but I am TOTALLY confident with these for my Toyota Highlander!! Like having a luxury tire ride, that also effortlessly handles winter weather! Highly recommended!

Fantastic on ice and snow. Communicative, responsive, fun and lots of grip. The comfort level on ice and snow is superb. On dry roads the comfort is good but maybe not superb (have been driving quite little on dry roads with R5s)

Given 82% while driving a BMW M3 (275/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 1,500 spirited miles
Rear wheel drive BMW. Staggered Wheel set up. 1000mi. Chicago winter. At highway speeds in the dry (we’ll say over 80mph @ 40°f) it’s down right scary. I don’t feel like I get good traction and the car wanders a bit. At wide curves in the dry, the traction control light comes on and then when I straighten out the LSD kicks in and it has a lateral jolt. Oh, and when there’s strong winds… white knuckling it all the way to work. I took the car back to the shop because I thought it might be tire rub but they said everything was clean and then rebalanced. It’s been quite a winter this year-seemingly every winter scenario imaginable So that being said, in city driving with 4-5 in of snow @ -15° to 20°f under 45mph the tires are simply AMAZING! Remember, this is a rear wheel drive, very “torquey” car. Slush and cold rain it handled well. I might be so bold to say the tires handled better at 20° than at 40°f. The only winters I have to compare it with are Pirelli Sotozero 3, which handled great on the highway but not in the slush or snow. I truly wanted to love this tire particularly since they were really hard to come by in my area but on the highway it falls short.
