Mercedes Benz C220 CDI Estate Tyre Review Highlights

Writing about the Pirelli P Zero PZ5 given 97% (225-45-18)
Driving on a combination of roads for 10000 spirited miles
I've always placed a lot of importance on the tires of my cars (the importance I believe they deserve). Until now, I've always been a loyal customer of Michelin and Continental, which for me are the best tire brands on the market. However, after wearing out the Continental Ecocontact 6 tires that came on my Mercedes C220d, I wanted to switch to tires more suited to my spirited driving style on country roads and highways.

Regarding the Continental tires I had before, I can't fault them at all, as they did their job well. They were very comfortable (although a little soft for my taste), they achieved good mileage and offered spectacular fuel efficiency, but they fell short when driving spiritedly on winding roads.
I was clear that my next tires had to be more sporty. I had previously tried (on other cars and sizes) the Michelin Primacy 4 (which gave me very good results and I liked their semi-sporty feel), the Michelin PS5 (excellent, although a little soft) and the Continental SP5 (also excellent), in addition to some other All-Season models, which don't quite convince me. As I said, I was looking for options from these two brands. I had already decided that I would have to choose between the PS5 and the SP7, but then I saw the test in this very publication of the best UHP summer tires, which clearly declared the Pirelli PZ5 as the winner.
I, a loyal customer and consumer of Michelin and Continental, had to try this for myself, especially since the new PZ5 has a beautiful sidewall and would look great on my car. I'm telling you all this because I want you to understand that I've always fitted what I consider to be the best tires. Well, once my new PZ5s were fitted, I couldn't wait to try them and corroborate what many were starting to say about the new Pirelli tires. That same weekend I prepared a short trip to a mountain village. The first impressions were... a complete shock. They were unlike anything I had ever tried before. As the young people say these days... it blew my mind.

The first thing that surprised me is how quickly they reach optimal temperature (I know this from the wheel sensors, which also measure temperature). I was pushing harder and harder in the corners, and it seemed like the tires had no limit; they just kept asking for more and more and more... It was an amazing feeling; they truly are ultra-high-performance tires. To make the tire slip or squeal, you have to do some really crazy things and you need a lot, a lot of horsepower. In corners, it feels like you have Velcro under the wheels. At high speeds on the highway, they're also impressive; they go straight as an arrow (provided the car is properly aligned, of course) and you can practically let go of the steering wheel at very high speeds. Regarding comfort, we must remember that I came from the Ecocontact tires, so they seem a bit noisy to me. And in terms of fuel consumption, well, more of the same; that level of grip is noticeable at the gas pump, but it's something you gladly accept when you try tires with this kind of performance and you enjoy spirited driving. In wet conditions, I haven't tried anything like them either. Simply put, I've never experienced the level of confidence and safety that these tires provide.

I currently have about 15,000 km on them and I'm more than delighted. I hardly notice any wear, so it seems they will have good mileage. I'll keep updating on this, to see how they age and if they are still as good in the wet at the end of their lifespan.

Fantastic on ice and snow. Communicative, responsive, fun and lots of grip. The comfort level on ice and snow is superb. On dry roads the comfort is good but maybe not superb (have been driving quite little on dry roads with R5s)

Driving on a combination of roads for 4800 easy going miles
Shocking tyre wear from two sets on rear of C Class estate in the last 18 months. One set provided 6000 miles and the more recent set, fitted April at Mercedes Centre, on 4800 and virtually down to wear bars. During inspection on ramp only 6 weeks ago I was advised the wear pattern, inflation and set-up locked perfect. Steady driving mainly on out of town roads with some motorway usage. Any thoughts?

The loudest tires ever bought in 30 years... I went back to seller who recommended brand and model, he replied is road's fault... Now after just 2000km I am looking forward to wear them out, as these tires turned a very very quiet car (reason why I bough it) in a rumble of madness on the motorway where grainy asphalt is used for draining water... let me reiterate: the loudest tires ever bought in 30 years !! I am italian and was happy to buy an italian product... after this experience... no more Pirelli... EVER ! There are so many good brands out there. Pirelli if you read this review, I am available to sell back these tires to you immediately. A very unhappy customer.

Dreadful tyre. Designed to kill drivers. I've had these rears on my Mercedes C220 for 2 weeks and they're going back to be removed. I've had three instances of the rear just shooting out almost to 90deg. Today I was nearly stuffed into a motorway dyke due to losing the rear on exiting 2nd gear roundabout. Terrible aquaplaning as well. Do not buy these tyres if you value your life.

Got the Run-flat version of this mid-range tyre for my AMG trimmed C Class estate. At initial fitting one tyre was defective and would not hold the pressure. Garage blamed it on manufacturing defect. I’ve also had one tyre break/bulge in the side wall after hitting a pothole which was disappointing. Now my rears are on the limit after only 1.5 years of driving so looking like I’m only going to get 15000 miles at best. I think it is slightly more comfortable than the continental contacts sports that came off. But being a Run-flat it’s still pretty harsh if you hit any minor imperfection in the road. Grip is good in both wet and dry and got quite good fuel efficiency with them. With children in the back I normally drive quite smoothly and only occasionally give it full beans. Given the issues I’ve had, the relatively poor wear rate and not being that much cheaper than a brisdgestone or Goodyear, will probably not go with these again.

Driving on mostly town for 6000 average miles
Worst tire that I had.
She came with the car and was put on the rear axle.
1) Dry grip is poor. With a sharp acceleration tires constantly slip. Even at speed.
2) Wet grip is life threatening. With a minimal push of gas, a skid occurs. Feeling like you're riding on ice.
3) Noisy.
4) Heavy and tough. Extremely low level of comfort.
5) The side protection performs decorative functions.
6) Extremely high fuel consumption.
7) Only one plus - long wear.
The tread is fine, but I'll take them off - my life is more expensive.

Had to replace hem after 17,000miles of normal family driving. Poor durability but otherwise a fair tyre.

I needed two tyres for the back of my Mercedes, and after reading lots of reviews and not wanting to spend lots of money, i bought two Rovellos for £110 (all included). I can only say that i am really happy with those tyres. The grip is good, the confort two, do not notice any road noise out of the ordinary. I have had this tyres on in lots of snow and rain this year, and with careful driving they performed really good. Will buy again.

Only real problem with these tyres is the wear rate which is appalling, I have done less than 10k and just been told the tread on my drive wheels is down to 3 mm. I have never before had to replace tyres before 20k and this is the first time I've had Continentals
