2025 Autobild Winter Tyre Test P8 of 20

The Uniroyal WinterExpert stands out as a well-rounded performer with particular emphasis on fuel efficiency. It achieves the highest fuel-saving potential in the test thanks to exceptionally low rolling resistance, making it an economical choice for high-mileage drivers concerned about operating costs. The tyre delivers balanced performance across all conditions without any severe weaknesses, showing competent behavior on snow, wet, and dry surfaces. However, it doesn't claim top honors in any single discipline, representing a jack-of-all-trades approach. Dry braking distances are slightly longer than the sportiest options, but still within acceptable limits for safe winter driving. At approximately €460 per set, it offers solid value, particularly when factoring in the fuel savings over its lifetime. This makes it an intelligent choice for practical drivers who want dependable winter performance combined with low running costs.

Winner: Michelin Pilot Alpin 5

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 12 tests. Updated October 11, 2025.

Uniroyal WinterExpert delivers mixed winter performance. Its standout areas are efficiency and value: it frequently posts low rolling resistance and competitive wear/value scores, and it regularly qualifies well in large Autobild braking shootouts. Snow capability is variable-occasionally excellent with class-leading traction/handling (2022 AB), but more often mid-pack in later tests. Wet performance is generally mid-table with some decent wet braking results, but aquaplaning resistance and wet handling rarely excel. The clearest weakness is dry braking, where it repeatedly ranks near the back, especially in UHP sizes.

Overall, the tyre suits drivers prioritizing efficiency and acceptable all-round capability at a fair price, but those needing strong dry stopping or consistently top-tier wet/snow grip have better options.

2025 ADAC Winter Tyre Test

ADAC 225/40 R18

The Uniroyal WinterExpert fails to achieve good ratings on dry and winter roads and therefore misses a good driving safety score, and despite earning a good environmental rating, this isn't sufficient to improve the overall judgment to "good." For driving safety, the tyre shows significant weaknesses in precision and steering feedback on dry roads, lacking the accuracy and directness expected during steering input and cornering - constant steering corrections are needed to maintain the desired path, and during sudden evasive maneuvers the WinterExpert doesn't convince as the test vehicle tends to oversteer, especially when counter-steering, with sliding phases that could be shorter, resulting in overall limit behavior that isn't at a high level and is just rated as satisfactory, though dry braking distances are still rated as good compared to the test field. On wet surfaces, the Uniroyal achieves good ratings with both braking distances and handling performance rated as good - the test vehicle can be driven safely and controllably over the course with the tyre consistently providing good limit reserves, though its longitudinal and lateral aquaplaning behavior is only satisfactory compared to the test field. In winter conditions, the WinterExpert narrowly misses good ratings, achieving good scores for both snow braking distances and snow traction compared to the test field, but failing to earn good handling ratings as it would need to better combine longitudinal and lateral forces, overall providing moderate grip levels in handling with satisfactory limit reserves, and also only achieving satisfactory ratings for ice braking. Regarding environmental performance, this French-manufactured tyre receives good ratings with good predicted mileage, low tyre wear, and good efficiency thanks to low weight and fuel consumption.

Auto Bild 205/55 R16

The Uniroyal WinterExpert offers a balanced performance, with particular strength in wet conditions. It provides good mileage and low rolling resistance, making it an economical choice. However, its moderate lateral guidance on snow suggests that while it's competent in winter conditions, it may not be the top performer in severe winter weather.

2023 ADAC 16 Inch Tyre Test

ADAC 205/60 R16

The UNIROYAL WinterExpert provides inadequate steering feedback and precision on dry roads, requiring frequent corrections. The vehicle tends to oversteer in dynamic maneuvers but earns a barely satisfactory rating in limit behavior. Its braking distance is below average but still rated as good. On wet roads, it narrowly misses a good rating, performing satisfactorily in braking and handling due to imprecise steering. It excels only in aquaplaning tests. On winter roads, it earns a nearly good rating for its snow braking and handling but falls short in snow traction and ice braking. Environmentally, the tyre achieves a satisfactory rating, with both its projected lifespan and wear rated as satisfactory. Despite good ratings in weight and fuel efficiency, the overall environmental performance is only satisfactory.

The UNIROYAL WinterExpert shows weaknesses both in the dry and in the wet, in both criteria it is rated as satisfactory. Despite the good snow and ice properties, it received the rating "recommended", since the satisfactory performance in the dry led to a devaluation of the overall grade.
