Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 vs Uniroyal WinterExpert

This head-to-head pits two very different winter philosophies against each other: the ultra-high-performance Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 versus the value-savvy, premium-touring Uniroyal WinterExpert. Across seven shared tests from 2023-2025 in 16-18-inch sizes, the Goodyear consistently targets maximum safety and control, especially in rain-soaked winters, while the Uniroyal prioritizes efficiency and affordability without glaring weaknesses.
Expect a clear split: Goodyear dominates objective safety metrics-wet braking and handling, aquaplaning resistance, snow control, wear, and noise-translating into top overall placings (ADAC 1/31; Auto Bild 2/23; multiple top-5 braking finishes). Uniroyal counters with class-leading rolling resistance, lower purchase cost, and solid all-round competence, appealing to high-mileage drivers watching running costs.

While it might look like the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 is better than the Uniroyal WinterExpert purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Outstanding wet safety: shortest wet braking (e.g., 31.7 m vs 32.9 m ADAC) and superior aquaplaning resistance
  • Confident snow performance with better handling/traction consistency across tests
  • Exceptional longevity and low abrasion (e.g., +44% wear vs Uniroyal in ADAC)
  • Lower noise and higher comfort for refined winter driving
  • Class-leading efficiency: consistently lower rolling resistance (often 6-12% lower)
  • Better value/pricing, improving total cost for high-mileage users
  • Balanced, predictable behavior in wet and snow without severe weaknesses
  • Occasional strong dry/wet showings for a touring-oriented winter tyre

Dry Braking

So far, amazing tire. One of the best ever made. It grips and it handles so much better than the eagle f1 asymmetric6, the previously fitted on this car, and the wintercontact ts 850 p on another. And the comfort, its like the car is floating. Not cheap though.

Since this is new model of Uniroyal winter tyres at first I was skeptical since there was no tyre reviews about them on the internet, but at the end I have decided to give them a chance and I'm quite satisfied with them. They have great grip and they behave great on dry, wet and snow, I didn't have a chance to test them on ice. Can't say much about wear since I drove them for about 2000miles so time will show.

Conclusion

The data shows a decisive performance edge for the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3. It wins 6 of 7 shared tests and most safety-critical categories: wet braking (often by 3-5%), aquaplaning (up to +15% in curved), and snow handling/traction. It's also markedly quieter and longer-lasting (ADAC wear +44%), making it a premium choice that justifies its higher price through safety and longevity. If your winters are wet or mixed and you value confident dynamics, the Goodyear is the safer bet.
Uniroyal's WinterExpert is the pragmatic alternative. It delivers balanced, predictable behavior with standout efficiency-consistently lower rolling resistance and better value scores-keeping fuel and upfront costs down. Its main compromises are precision on dry roads and ultimate grip limits in snow versus the Goodyear. For cost-conscious, high-mileage drivers in moderate winters, it's an intelligent, economical pick. The practical takeaway: choose Goodyear for maximum safety and control; choose Uniroyal to minimize total running costs without major sacrifices.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Goodyear frequently top-tier (ADAC 1/31; Auto Bild 2/23) vs Uniroyal mid-pack (ADAC 11/31; Auto Bild 9/23)
  • Wet braking edge: Goodyear typically 3-5% shorter; critical for emergency stops
  • Aquaplaning: Goodyear notably stronger, up to +15% in curved scenarios
  • Snow control: Goodyear leads in handling/traction across most tests; Uniroyal occasionally close but behind
  • Longevity: Goodyear projects far higher mileage and lower abrasion (e.g., 76,500 km vs 53,000 km ADAC)
  • Efficiency/Cost: Uniroyal wins rolling resistance and value, lowering fuel and purchase costs

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
