In each test the better of the two figures counts as 100% and the other as its share of it, so a 36 m stop against 34.2 m is 95%; each spoke averages the shared tests that recorded it. 3 measurements recorded in only one shared test are left off; every measurement is in the table further down.

Category scores are percentiles among tyres of the same season and class: 90 means this tyre out-performs 90% of them, measured across every test we hold, not only the ones it appeared in.

Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tyres shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

All 2 Kinergy ST AS reviewsBought these after a horrible experience with some Tiger Paws (avg rating in all categories about a 5) Got them over 5 years ago and have been very satisfied with all aspects of this tire. Even with over 60k miles, they handle very well (for a moderately spirited, mostly highway driver--at least as spirited as my old KIA Soul w/ 250+k miles will allow) and are pretty quiet. Traction in wet is excellent and in snow (we get a lot in MN) is really pretty good. OEM tires were Nexen Premier and these were better. Although I still have some tread left, I can see the wear bars sprouting and since I am somewhat elderly, am about to replace them with something else. Why? Because I want to.

Reading the results
Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.
Hankook's Kinergy ST AS and Kumho's Solus TA51+ sit in the same mainstream space: touring-focused, all-season passenger tyres aimed at everyday comfort, low running costs and safe, predictable handling rather than outright sportiness. On paper they look like direct alternatives, but the two AutoView group tests (in different sizes and even different test themes) reveal two distinct personalities.
Across both shared tests, the Kumho repeatedly comes out as the more complete “set-and-forget” option-stronger objective braking (especially in the wet), better refinement, and higher measured cornering limits-while the Hankook consistently scores better for subjective steering/handling feel. In other words: Kinergy ST AS appeals more to the driver's hands; Solus TA51+ tends to win on the stopwatch and in daily comfort metrics.
Conclusion
The clearest, most repeatable advantage belongs to the Kumho Solus TA51+ in safety-critical braking and day-to-day refinement. It beats the Hankook in wet braking in both tests (35.386 m vs 37.333 m in 245/45 R19; 32.19 m vs 32.96 m in 215/55 R17) and also leads dry braking both times (40.813 m vs 42.18 m; 42.88 m vs 43.13 m). It's also consistently quieter and more comfortable in the AutoView scoring, and it topped both overall comparisons (5/9 vs 8/9 in the all-season group; 1/5 vs 4/5 in the comfort test).
The Hankook Kinergy ST AS's main counterpunch is steering character: it wins subjective dry handling in both tests (6.75 vs 6.62; 7.5 vs 7.3) and is described as more consistent and predictable at the limit. However, the same reports repeatedly flag drawbacks that matter to touring buyers-higher noise, a firmer/“choppier” low-speed ride, and (in the all-season test) notably weaker wet braking plus grip that fades under repeated hard cornering. The practical takeaway is simple: if you want the most well-rounded touring tyre with strong measured performance and comfort, the Kumho is the safer bet; choose the Hankook mainly if steering feel and progressive breakaway matter more to you than ultimate wet stopping distance and cabin refinement.

Where this data comes from
Finishing positions and measurements are transcribed from each published test. A test only counts here when both tyres ran in it, so every figure was recorded on the same car, size and day as the one it is compared to.
About the TR Score
The Tyre Reviews Score rates each tyre out of 10 from every independent test result and vetted owner review we hold, so two tyres can be compared even before a test has run them together.
Who does the testing
Every test published as a Tyre Reviews test is run by Jonathan Benson, who has been testing tyres independently since 2007.
