Continental TerrainContact AT vs Toyo Open Country AT III

This head-to-head pits two popular mild all-terrain options for SUVs and 4x4s: Continental's TerrainContact AT versus Toyo's Open Country AT III. Across three shared professional tests, the Continental routinely tops the charts on-road, while the Toyo leans more toward rugged, off-road manners and efficiency. Both are all-season, but their priorities are clearly different.

Expect the Continental to deliver class-leading wet and dry security, shorter braking, and the quietest, most composed ride of the group. The Toyo counters with stronger off-road feel and lower rolling resistance, plus a slight edge in snow traction/handling in tightly matched results, even if it trails in most road-focused metrics.

While it might look like the Continental TerrainContact AT is better than the Toyo Open Country AT III purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Best-in-test wet grip: shortest wet braking and faster wet handling laps
  • Consistently shorter dry braking and precise, confidence-inspiring steering
  • Class-leading comfort and notably low noise (≈3-4 dB quieter in 2022 test)
  • Strong aquaplaning resistance (straight and curved) and overall road refinement
  • Better subjective off-road feel on gravel; confident and predictable beyond the limit
  • Lower rolling resistance for improved efficiency
  • Slight edge in snow traction/handling in very close results
  • Solid dry capability with dependable emergency-lane-change behavior

Real World Driver Reviews

Continental TerrainContact AT Driver Reviews

Drivers largely praise the Continental TerrainContact AT for excellent wet traction and hydroplane resistance, a quiet and comfortable ride for an AT, confident handling/feedback, and solid treadwear with even wear patterns. Many also report reliable performance on gravel, dirt, and light-to-moderate trails. A minority noted concerns in winter mountain conditions, while others reported better-than-average snow/ice traction, so cold-weather performance appears mixed. Overall sentiment is strongly positive, especially for on-road manners in rain and everyday use.

Toyo Open Country AT III Driver Reviews

Drivers largely praise the Toyo Open Country AT III for confident all-terrain performance, above-average snow traction, strong wet/hydroplane resistance, and a surprisingly quiet ride. Many high-scoring reviews report long life with even wear and robust durability, along with stable on-road handling. A minority note faster tread wear (especially on lighter vehicles) and occasional noise, but these are not common themes.

Best Review for the Continental TerrainContact AT
Given 91% 275/60 R20 on mostly motorways for 59 spirited miles
Quiet tires on the road. Rated for 60k and buying a new set next week with 300 miles short of the 60k guarantee. Have driven these in snow and ice with better than average results for traction. Great during heaving rains with freeway driving.

Best Review for the Toyo Open Country AT III
Given 86% 285/75 R17 on a combination of roads for 10,000 spirited miles
A definite step in the right direction from the older AT2 in basically every way. I've driven multiple ram rebels that came with them stock, and I can say that the AT3 on my outdoorsman makes it feel more confident and capable than those trucks ever felt. Living in Atlantic Canada and being mid-late January, I have gotten a pretty good chance to experience how these work in the winter. Snow traction is above average for the all terrain class, although ice traction is still pretty average for the class. It's worth noting as well that these tires are very quiet compared to some of their main... Continue reading this review using the link below

Conclusion

The data shows a decisive on-road winner: the TerrainContact AT. It takes first overall at Tire Rack 2025 (1/9 vs. 7/9) and 2022 (2/9 vs. 7/9), with meaningful advantages in wet braking (up to ~7%), wet handling, aquaplaning resistance, dry braking (~4-5%), steering precision, comfort, and especially noise (e.g., 71.9 dB vs. 75.3 dB). For daily driving, highway trips, and wet-climate safety, the Continental is the safer, calmer, and more polished choice.

The Toyo's case rests on its off-road composure and efficiency. It scores subjective wins off-road (gravel feel), posts lower rolling resistance, and edges the Continental in tightly grouped snow traction/handling runs, while proving predictable in emergency maneuvers. If your usage skews toward trails and you value a sturdier feel and better fuel economy over refinement, the Toyo remains appealing-just accept the stiffer ride and higher noise. Bottom line: choose Continental for road-first confidence, Toyo for off-road leaning and efficiency.
Key Differences
  • On-road dominance: Continental leads wet braking by ~5-7% and dry braking by ~4-5% across tests
  • Refinement: Continental is quieter and more comfortable; Toyo rides stiff and noisy
  • Steering: Continental is more precise and responsive; Toyo feels rubbery at low speeds
  • Aquaplaning: Continental resists both straight and curved aquaplaning better
  • Efficiency: Toyo has lower rolling resistance; Continental is higher
  • Off-road feel: Toyo scores higher subjectively on gravel; Continental can feel slower to react sub-limit

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
