Continental TerrainContact A/T

The Continental TerrainContact AT is a premium all-terrain tyre that feels notably road-focused, delivering standout wet grip, strong dry handling and a refined, quiet ride for the category. Across both driver feedback and independent testing it consistently ranks among the best for on-road safety and comfort, particularly in the rain. It also proves capable on gravel, dirt roads and light-to-moderate trails, making it an excellent everyday A/T for mixed use. Winter performance, however, is the main caveat, especially in more demanding snow and mountain conditions.

Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tyre tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

Continental TerrainContact A/T delivers what testers describe as one of the most competent experiences in both wet and dry conditions while offering the nicest road ride in the entire test. The tyre impresses with responsive steering that feels precise and controlled, while maintaining reasonable noise levels that don't become intrusive during daily driving. Testers appreciated the strong braking performance and reliable grip when needed, making it feel trustworthy in various conditions. The only criticism noted was that drivers might appreciate slightly more cushioning for enhanced comfort on rough road surfaces, though this was a minor concern given the tyre's overall excellence.
Ok in snow tests (not snow rated).
2nd/9
Best in wet handling, shortest wet braking distance, good aquaplaning resistance, shortest dry braking, good dry handling time, good on dirt, lowest noise on test, excellent levels of comfort.
Oversteer handling balance on gravel, high rolling resistance.
The Continental TerrainContact AT was the best tire in the wet grip tests with the best wet handling and shortest wet braking, good aquaplaning resistance, shortest dry braking, very good dry handling, and some of the lowest noise levels and best comfort on test. Where could the tire be better? It had a disappointingly high rolling resistance, and while the lap time on gravel finished mid pack, sublimit subjectively it was hindered by slow to react steering and a wandering rear axle. A very very good tire, with peak safety in both the braking tests. We highly recommend this tire and this is exactly what we think a mild AT tire should be.

Review Summary

Based on 8 user reviews

Drivers largely praise the Continental TerrainContact AT for excellent wet traction and hydroplane resistance, a quiet and comfortable ride for an AT, confident handling/feedback, and solid treadwear with even wear patterns. Many also report reliable performance on gravel, dirt, and light-to-moderate trails. A minority noted concerns in winter mountain conditions, while others reported better-than-average snow/ice traction, so cold-weather performance appears mixed. Overall sentiment is strongly positive, especially for on-road manners in rain and everyday use.

Strengths
  • Wet traction and hydroplaning resistance
  • Quiet/low road noise
  • Ride comfort/refinement
  • Handling and steering feedback
  • Treadwear/longevity (even wear)
  • Gravel/dirt light off-road capability

Given 90% while driving a Nissan Navara D23 2,3TDI 190HP (265/60 R18) on a combination of roads for 500 average miles
I replaced the Kumho Crugen H51's, which were great on the bitumen but not so good on the gravel, the Terraincontacts however have shown themselves to be a great tyre as they are very good on both gravel and bitumen, although a tad noisier on bitumen but not overly noticeable on our roads... I was looking at the Pirelli scorpion atr's but for $200 per tyre fitted they were a no brainer.

Given 79% while driving a Chevrolet silverado 1500 (275/55 R20) on a combination of roads for 25,000 average miles
Continental Terrain Contact AT is a great performing tire on my Silverado. The highlights are incredible wet traction grip and hydroplane resistance, quiet, good handling, decent ride quality. I am so impressed with the wet grip because I rarely see traction control come on with these Continentals. So much better than other tires I've used. I have also driven on loose dirt and gravel without issue. My only complaint about the Continental Terrain Contact AT is tread life but that may not totally be the tires fault. When I had the tires put on I also replaced the shocks. The alignment was off and chewed up some tire life. However, after getting an alignment I am seeing 1/32 of rubber consumed after 5,000 miles so these would not have hit the mileage rating anyway.

Given 63% while driving a Lincoln Navigator (265/60 R18) on a combination of roads for 10,000 spirited miles
Really like the all around performance in my normal environment of southern Texas. Off-road grip is great with a deep tread pattern. Noise on road is quiet for the type or tire it is. If you never get into a winter environment, I highly recommend them. However, my last trip to Colorado put me in so many close calls I couldn’t get off the mountain fast enough.

Initial Impressions Review
Given 78% while driving a Toyota 4runner (265/70 R17) on for 40,000 miles
These were used on a 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road in the Denver Colorado region.
These were used for ~10 short easy to moderate offroad trips consisting of trails with sand and rocks.
These were used on about 15k miles of long road trips, the rest was commuting and short trips.

My priorities for these tars were confidence on ice, wet ice, wet pavement, snow, and gravel.
These replaced the OEM tires, which I believe were Bridgestone Duelers.

I hated the OEM tires in any cold and wet weather. I did not have confidence stopping in wet conditions.

These have been terrific. First, they have worn better and more evenly than most tires I've owned in my life. It is very satisfying that both front and tires have worn almost equally across the full breadth of tread and for the life of the tires.

Snow and wet traction was the reason I bought these and for AT tires, I have been very happy. They are not perfect, but I always felt I had great control and feedback. For me, it isn't only that tires have good traction, but also that I have good feedback when they are losing or at the edge of traction and I always felt confident and in control with these tires. I could always feel slip before a loss of traction in both wet and dry conditions.

I don't drive enough different vehicles to comment on gas mileage or noise in a comparative sense, but my mileage on the 4runner has been dead on manufacturer estimates. Road noise is noticeable at highway speeds

I'm not a frequent offroader, but I have taken these on mild trails many times, and moderate trails a few times. On one moderate trail, the tires were abused on sharp rocks and steep inclines. They took a fair amount of damage to the lugs. Still, they went another 10k miles with no issues.

Now that these are at the end of their usable life, traction is noticeably diminished, with about 1/16" tread in the middle of the tires this is expected, but it is still surprisingly decent except in snow.

I think tire technology has improved and I'm considering Nokian Outpost nATs as replacements, but if I had to buy these again, I would have no regrets. I'm very satisfied with them.

Given 89% while driving a Land Rover Rivian R1T (275/65 R20) on a combination of roads for 12,500 spirited miles
These replaced the OEM Pirelli Scorpion on my Rivian - I was looking for a road focused AT tire and these have worked out great! They are quieter, more comfortable, wearing more slowly. Feel safe in heavy rain. No complaints and would buy again. I can’t speak to snow performance yet, but the OEMs were 3 Peak which you have to take with a grain of salt, but was somewhat reassuring.

Given 91% while driving a Ram 1500 4wd (275/60 R20) on mostly motorways for 59 spirited miles
Quiet tires on the road. Rated for 60k and buying a new set next week with 300 miles short of the 60k guarantee. Have driven these in snow and ice with better than average results for traction. Great during heaving rains with freeway driving.

Given 85% while driving a Kia Motors Sorrento xt 3.5 v6 4x4 (/70 R17) on a combination of roads for 20,000 average miles
For an all terrain tire, wow. I use the Michelin CrossClimate 2 as my winter tire and swapping to these in Spring, it's hard to tell the difference in grip and comfort. There is slightly more tread pattern noise at speed but it's pretty low. Very impressive tire.
