Continental VikingContact 8 vs Michelin X Ice North 4

This comparison pits two Nordic winter specialists against each other: Continental's friction (non-studded) VikingContact 8 and Michelin's studded X-Ice North 4. Despite different technologies, both target premium touring comfort and safety in harsh winters for passenger cars.
Across three shared professional tests, the Continental swept overall victories (3/3), driven by standout balance on wet and dry asphalt, strong snow performance, best-in-class rolling efficiency, and high comfort. Michelin countered with decisive wins on pure ice metrics, but inconsistencies in handling and higher rolling resistance tempered its results. The core trade-off is clear: everyday versatility and efficiency (Continental) versus maximum straight-line ice bite (Michelin).

Best Review for the Continental VikingContact 8
Given 82% 235/50 R18 on a combination of roads for 1,000 average miles
I only have around 1,000 miles on these tires, but I was able to drive them in some heavy snow and ice conditions, so I can attest to their incredible performance in inclement weather. The ice grip is where I have been most impressed. The lateral traction I have felt in icy conditions make these feel incredibly capable and safe. I was able to drive on the freeway at a normal pace, while most of the other cars on the road slowed to a crawl. Snow grip has been very good too. Even when I put my F34 BMW into "Sport+" I have to try hard to get it sideways. These tires are also incredibly... Continue reading this review using the link below

Best Review for the Michelin X Ice North 4
Given 91% 205/55 R16 T on a combination of roads for 0 spirited miles
Uncompromising grip on all types of winter surfaces. Out of competition on the ice tracks. Very low noise level, audible only at low speeds when driving on a clean road. With these tires, it is very difficult to achieve ABS actuation. Perfectly copes with leaving the track. After running-in in compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the studs took their position and after 15,000 km remain in place. I recommend to buy, the best studded tire.

Conclusion

The VikingContact 8 delivers the most complete package: top overall rankings in all shared tests, confident handling on wet and dry roads, competitive snow performance, excellent comfort/noise, and the best fuel economy. For mixed Nordic use-urban commutes, frequent bare asphalt, slush, and varied temperatures-it offers the safest, calmest, and most economical drive.
The X-Ice North 4 shines where studs matter most: it dominates ice braking and traction and remains competent on snow. However, slower steering, weaker wet/aquaplaning capability, and higher rolling resistance reduce its appeal for daily mixed conditions. Choose Michelin if your priority is maximum ice grip on repeatedly glassy surfaces; otherwise, Continental is the smarter, more rounded choice with better value through efficiency and broader capability.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Continental 1st in all three tests; Michelin 3rd-5th range
  • Ice performance: Michelin wins ice braking/traction; Continental trails significantly on pure ice
  • Wet capability: Continental clearly better (handling and aquaplaning); Michelin struggles more in water/slush
  • Efficiency: Continental leads rolling resistance; Michelin notably poorer fuel economy
  • Comfort/noise: Continental quieter and more composed; Michelin more stud-typical harshness
  • Steering/handling feel: Continental precise and calm; Michelin slower steering with understeer on asphalt

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
