Dunlop Winter Sport 5 vs Radar Dimax Alpine

This head-to-head pits two very different winter tyres against each other: the ultra-high-performance Dunlop Winter Sport 5 versus the budget-oriented touring Radar Dimax Alpine. Across six shared tests from 2020-2024, the Dunlop consistently places higher, with notable strength in wet safety and aquaplaning resistance.

The Radar counters with competent snow manners, low noise, and attractive pricing. But the gap in wet braking and stability is substantial in multiple sizes, which has clear implications for everyday winter driving where cold, wet roads are common.

Best Review for the Dunlop Winter Sport 5
Given 81% 225/40 R18 W on a combination of roads for 24,000 spirited miles
I bought these as the successor to Dunlop WinterSport4 which I had been very happy with before, especially with wet grip and good feel in wet/poor conditions. Living and driving around Scotland I use the WinterSport as an all-season tyre. The 5's have improved in all areas and especially in dry handling which was a slight letdown with the 4's. Performance now tails off above around 12 degrees ambient, compared to around 7 degrees with the 4's. At high speed in summer the tyres can get a little 'floaty', but for me this is an acceptable compromise to the excellent grip in cold wet... Continue reading this review using the link below

I have this tyres for 1 month(1500 km) were i was on the icy, snowy and wet(and very wet) roads. On snow, tyres are really good and also on dry surfaces. On wet surfaces, are good but not like Michelin alpin a5. Very good price for this performances. I really recomanded

Conclusion

The Dunlop Winter Sport 5 is the clear all-rounder and safety pick. It dominates wet braking in every shared test (often by 6-13%), leads wet handling and both straight and curved aquaplaning, and delivers stronger dry dynamics-translating to more margin for error in real traffic. It also posts better rolling resistance than the Radar in the key Sportscars test.

The Radar Dimax Alpine shines with quiet running and decent snow feel, occasionally edging the Dunlop in snow braking/handling by small margins. However, its wet-road limitations and high rolling resistance undermine its overall value unless price is the overriding factor. If you frequently face mixed winter conditions (cold rain, slush, thaw/freeze), choose the Dunlop; if your winters are predominantly packed-snow at low speeds and budget is tight, the Radar can suffice, with awareness of its wet-safety trade-offs.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking advantage strongly favors Dunlop (e.g., 48.8 m vs 62.1 m in 235/35 R19; ~21% shorter)
  • Aquaplaning performance decisively better on Dunlop (straight +12% speed; curved +92% g in Sportscars test)
  • Dunlop consistently ranks higher overall (6/6 test wins)
  • Radar marginally better in some snow sub-tests (snow braking/handling/circle) with small gaps
  • Noise comfort favors Radar (≈2.7 dB quieter in Sportscars test)
  • Rolling resistance lower on Dunlop in the shared detailed test; Radar flagged for very high RR

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
