The Hankook Optimo 4S repeatedly earned praise for aquaplaning resistance and balanced snow and dry handling, but its later test results were less competitive. Auto Bild placed it third of ten in both 2011 and 2012, highlighting the best aquaplaning result in 2011 and short wet and dry braking distances in 2012. It then finished seventh of nine in Auto Bild 2013 and seventh of ten in Auto Zeitung 2014, both still praising secure snow and dry handling and good aquaplaning resistance. Auto Express 2011 described it as the best all-season entry in a winter comparison, where it finished fifth of nine overall.

Wet grip and responses were the recurring reservations. Auto Zeitung 2014 criticised long wet braking and understeer, while Auto Bild 2013 noted delayed steering and wet-road behaviour. ADAC 2016 placed it last of seven, describing it as very weak in the wet and weak on dry roads, an unusual contrast with the earlier dry-handling praise. Braking verdicts also differed, from short distances in 2012 to long dry stops in 2013. Efficiency was praised in 2011, 2012 and 2016, but Auto Zeitung 2014 found high rolling resistance. The broad record supports useful all-season versatility, with more consistent aquaplaning strengths than wet-grip reassurance.
