Michelin CrossClimate 2 AW vs Nokian Remedy WRG5

This head-to-head pits two premium all-weather stalwarts with different philosophies: Michelin's CrossClimate 2 AW, the segment benchmark, versus Nokian's new Remedy WRG5, which leans into winter assurance and ownership value. Tested in both 225/45 R18 and 225/65 R17 fitments across 2025 programs, the Michelin took two overall wins, while the Nokian earned recommendations and plaudits for comfort, hydroplaning resistance, and warranty.

Across the shared data, the Michelin consistently stops shorter and grips better in the wet and on ice-where margins can be critical-while the Nokian counters with a calmer ride, lower price, excellent curved aquaplaning, and confident snow balance. The result is a clear leader for all-round control and efficiency versus a value-savvy option tailored to rough winter commutes and deeper water.

Best Review for the Michelin CrossClimate 2 AW
Given 83% 235/55 R19 on mostly town for 1,000 average miles
A lot of the score categories are difficult to estimate for my car, my driving style, and perhaps most notably, the traffic in my region (Washington state, Seattle area) which is usually very dense. It's too early to rate wear, and I don't think it would be fair to rate them on handling because it's an SUV that I don't push terribly hard in cornering and such. Compared to the outgoing stock all-season Continental Sport LXs, these tires are absolutely a step up. The main reason I got these is because of all the research I've done, including watching nearly every relevant video Jonathan has... Continue reading this review using the link below

Conclusion

The Michelin CrossClimate 2 AW is the more complete performer. It wins both tests, dominates wet categories (notably 7-14% shorter wet stops), leads in ice braking (~9% shorter), and edges snow braking/traction, while also posting the lowest rolling resistance on test. Its drawbacks are cost and slightly firmer, noisier manners.

The Nokian Remedy WRG5 brings meaningful strengths: excellent curved-aquaplaning stability, composed snow balance (often best subjectively), agreeable comfort and noise, and a lower purchase price paired with a standout 60,000-mile no-age-limit warranty. However, its longer wet braking and occasionally edgy wet behavior in one test are material compromises. If you prioritize ultimate all-conditions grip and efficiency, choose Michelin; if you value comfort, warranty, deep-water confidence, and price, the Nokian is a smart alternative. The practical takeaway: Michelin for maximum safety margins year-round, Nokian for budget-friendly winter poise and relaxed daily use.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking: Michelin stops 7-14% shorter; Nokian can be notably longer in the wet
  • Ice braking: Michelin ~9% shorter; Nokian slightly better in ice traction once moving
  • Aquaplaning: Nokian leads in curved aquaplaning; Michelin edges straight-line aqua
  • Ride/refinement: Nokian is more comfortable and quieter; Michelin can feel firm/jumpy
  • Efficiency: Michelin has the lowest rolling resistance; Nokian is slightly higher
  • Value/warranty: Nokian is cheaper with a 60k-mile no-age-limit warranty; Michelin is pricier with fewer ownership perks

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
