Barum Polaris 6 vs Kleber Krisalp HP3

This head-to-head pits two budget-friendly Central-European winter touring tyres with distinct philosophies: Barum's Polaris 6 (from the Continental family) versus Kleber's Krisalp HP3 (a Michelin secondary brand). Tested in 225/40 R18 across Autobild's full winter program and an independent braking comparison, they share value positioning but diverge strongly in surface specialism.

Across the two shared tests, the Barum consistently ranks higher overall (8/22 vs 14/22; 10/52 vs 12/52), driven by better dry and wet braking, lower noise, and class-leading rolling resistance. The Kleber counters with standout snow performance-shortest snow braking in both datasets and superior traction and agility on packed snow-while giving up time and distance on dry and wet tarmac and aquaplaning.

  • Lowest rolling resistance in the pair (~11% better), aiding fuel economy
  • Quieter and more comfortable ride (65.2 dB; higher comfort score)
  • Stronger value proposition (lower purchase price and better price/performance)
  • Top-tier snow braking (up to 3.9% shorter) and excellent traction
  • Better snow handling and slalom agility
  • Superior aquaplaning resistance (straight +7.7%, curved +19%)
  • Stable wet-circle and wet-handling balance at the limit

Best tires I've ever owned, for the money. Smooth like butter and quiet for a winter tire on potholes, road cracks or rough roads. Not quiet for a winter tire but really quiet. Grip is superb, both wet and dry. Feedback is numbed by the smoothness of the tire. Handling is very good.

Conclusion

The Barum Polaris 6 is the better all-round winter choice for mixed Central-European conditions: shorter dry and wet braking (e.g., -3% wet in both tests), calmer noise, and a major efficiency edge (≈11% lower rolling resistance) that compounds its lower purchase price (~€380/set vs ~€500). Its only notable weakness is average wet handling versus class leaders, but it remains safely within acceptable margins.

The Kleber Krisalp HP3 is the snow specialist: best-in-group snow braking (up to 3.9% shorter), stronger traction, and better snow agility. However, these strengths come with compromises-longer dry braking, weaker wet braking, and notably poorer aquaplaning reserves-plus a higher price that undercuts its value for mixed climates. Choose Kleber for mountainous or consistently snowy regions; choose Barum for varied winter weather, urban commuting, and fuel-conscious drivers.
Key Differences
  • Overall rankings favor Barum (8/22 and 10/52) over Kleber (14/22 and 12/52)
  • Barum brakes shorter on wet and dry; Kleber stops shorter on snow
  • Kleber offers stronger aquaplaning reserves; Barum trails in deep-water stability
  • Barum is quieter and more comfortable (65.2 dB vs 66.5 dB; higher comfort score)
  • Barum delivers lower rolling resistance (~10.9% better) and lower running costs
  • Price/value: Barum ~€380/set vs Kleber ~€500/set, improving Barum's total cost of ownership

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
