Kumho Solus 4S HA32 Plus vs Vredestein Quatrac

This head-to-head puts two popular premium-touring all-season tyres under the microscope: Kumho's Solus 4S HA32 Plus and Vredestein's Quatrac. Across six shared tests from 2022-2024, the Quatrac consistently ranks higher overall, including a decisive win in AutoBild 2024 (1/17 vs. 13/17), while the Kumho posts a few isolated strengths.

Patterns are clear: Vredestein dominates on wet and dry roads with shorter braking, better aquaplaning resistance, and sharper handling. Kumho counters with solid winter aptitude-especially on snow and ice-and, in several tests, a stronger value proposition. The result is a contrast between year-round safety and precision (Quatrac) versus budget-friendly winter assurance (HA32+).

Test Results

Independent comparison tyre tests are the best source of data to get tyre information from, and the good news is there have been six tests which compare both tyres directly!

While it might look like the Vredestein Quatrac is better than the Kumho Solus 4S HA32 Plus purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Stronger snow and ice performance (wins in snow/ice braking and traction in multiple tests)
  • Competitive value and lower purchase price in several sizes
  • Quiet exterior noise in some tests
  • Occasionally better wear/value mix depending on size (e.g., ADAC 2024 wear edge)
  • Consistently shorter wet and dry braking (6/6 category wins in wet and dry braking)
  • Outstanding aquaplaning resistance (notably +22-34% in curved tests)
  • Balanced, precise handling with direct steering
  • Strong efficiency package in recent tests (lower RR, fuel use; standout wear in AutoBild 2024)

Best Review for the Kumho Solus 4S HA32 Plus
Given 71% 185/60 R15 on a combination of roads for 45,000 spirited miles
In snow, the longitudinal (throttle, brake) feels very weak. But the lateral grip is somehow perfectly fine. Its characteristics make it unsteady to drive, because it gives much more in a corner than in a single brake application, where you have to count on it to slide.

Best Review for the Vredestein Quatrac
Given 77% 205/55 R16 on a combination of roads for 7 spirited miles
They grip surprisingly well for an all season tire in the dry and snow. I have these mounted on a 8th generation Honda civic sedan with the r18 engine and these tires have me absolutely glued to the ground. I replaced my old Goodyear eagle "all season" tire which had the snow performance of a summer tire in the snow and didn't even preform well in wet or dry. But back to the vredestein, I once was screwing around (dry, 65°f) taking a highway exchang ramp a bit too fast, I hit one rather sharp bend at probably 55+mph and didn't break traction for a second, no tire squeal or anything. Conclusion

If your priority is confidence in changeable UK/EU weather-frequent rain, standing water, and mixed temperatures-the Vredestein Quatrac is the safer, more rounded choice. It repeatedly stops shorter in the wet (often by 4-9%), resists aquaplaning far better (up to ~27-34% advantage in curved aqua), and brings composed, precise handling. It also posted excellent tread life and economy in AutoBild 2024, reinforcing long-term value despite a generally higher purchase price.

The Kumho Solus 4S HA32 Plus suits drivers who face regular winter episodes and want a lower upfront price: it often edges snow/ice braking and traction, and can deliver good mileage/value in some test sizes. However, its weaker aquaplaning reserves and longer wet/dry stops make it a compromise in rainy seasons. In short: choose Quatrac for all-weather security and handling polish; pick HA32+ if snow/ice traction and initial cost matter most.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Quatrac finishes higher across the test set (5 overall wins vs. 1 for Kumho)
  • Wet safety: Quatrac brakes 4-9% shorter and handles better in the wet across years
  • Aquaplaning: Quatrac holds a significant advantage in straight and curved aquaplaning (+6-34%)
  • Dry stopping: Quatrac consistently stops shorter; Kumho only nicks a dry handling win once
  • Winter focus: Kumho generally performs better on snow/ice braking and traction
  • Efficiency/longevity: Quatrac shows lower rolling resistance and, in 2024 AutoBild, much longer wear (+35%) and lower abrasion

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
