Data updated

Which should you buy?

Pick the Vredestein Quatrac if your priority is wet-road safety, aquaplaning resistance, and a quiet/comfortable touring feel (the most consistent top performer overall). Pick the Hankook Kinergy 4S2 if you value sharper dry handling feel, strong cost-per-mile/wear in several Auto Bild results, and you're willing to accept that wet braking can lag the best-in-class depending on size and generation.

Where the Kinergy 4S2 is stronger

  • Crisp, confidence-inspiring dry handling with strong subjective steering feel (often highlighted as a key positive; e.g., Tyre Reviews 2026/27 bested Quatrac on dry lap and subjective dry scores)
  • Frequently competitive in snow braking/traction across multiple tests (category summary shows more wins in snow braking and traction than Quatrac)
  • Strong wear/value story in several Auto Bild tests (e.g., 2023 predicted wear 60,289 km vs 43,091 km; 2025 wear 58,100 km vs 45,850 km) and often better value metrics

In each test the better of the two figures counts as 100% and the other as its share of it, so a 36 m stop against 34.2 m is 95%; each spoke averages the shared tests that recorded it. The scale stops at 95%: a point further in sits on the hub's edge, hollow. 9 measurements recorded in only one shared test are left off; every measurement is in the table further down.

Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tyres shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

Scores beyond the shared tests

Hankook Kinergy 4S2

  • 75%from 72 reviews
  • 74%would buy again
  • 995,659 milesdriven by reviewers

Owners generally rate the Hankook Kinergy 4S2 as a strong all-weather all-rounder, with most praise focused on dependable wet and dry grip (mentioned by around half of reviewers) and reassuring snow traction. Longevity is often reported as good, and a notable minority also highlight the comfortable ride and strong value for money. The most consistent drawback is road noise, raised by over a third of owners, while a smaller group report higher fuel consumption/rolling resistance.

  • Confident wet grip in cold and rain
  • Strong dry grip for an all-season tyre
  • Good tread life for year-round use
  • Surprisingly capable traction in snow
  • Noticeable road noise or whining at certain speeds
  • Higher rolling resistance or worse fuel economy
  • Can feel less predictable at the limit (soft/squealy breakaway)

Excellent tires for all seasons, this was my first test as I've always used summer/winter tires on all my cars for more safety and longevity. These tires perform very well on dry roads, in corners whether wet or not, but especially great on snow, whether it's recovery, acceleration, or grip (Summit of the Vosges for example or the Belgian Ardennes). I was very surprised despite all my extensive research on tires with a good price-quality ratio. After 46,000 km, I wouldn't try them again on snow as I've far exceeded the winter wear indicator, but there are still 2mm of tread left for summer.

Vredestein Quatrac

  • 81%from 30 reviews
  • 86%would buy again
  • 345,646 milesdriven by reviewers

Drivers report the Vredestein Quatrac is a strong all-season tyre, most often praised for excellent wet-road grip and confident performance in cold conditions, including light-to-moderate snow and ice. Many reviewers highlight strong longevity (often projecting 60-80k km) along with good comfort and generally low noise, making it a solid value alternative to pricier rivals. A minority note higher cabin noise on certain vehicles and slightly less sharp/softer dry handling (especially in hotter temperatures) compared with more summer-focused tyres.

  • Excellent wet grip and confident wet braking
  • Strong cold-weather performance (snow/ice capable for an all-season)
  • Good longevity/treadwear and even wear reported by many
  • Comfortable ride quality
  • Can be noisier for some vehicles/sizes (noted by a minority)
  • Dry handling/steering feel not as sporty or can feel softer in heat versus summer-oriented tyres

Finally retired these at 55k miles. They were real good over all. Average: price and comfort. Above average: off road, snow and ice grip. Way above average: wet and dry grip. The wear was good too, if my alignment didn't go out I could've gotten about 62k out of these.

These tires went through hell and back. I took my car off road several times with these, they went through several snow storms including a couple blizzards. They never once let me down. I once got mired about 4" deep in muddy sand and was able to get out (fwd civic).

I ended up buying a new set of these. Very satisfied overall, I doubt there's another tire that has such good performance across the board without being costly. My new set was around mid $700s in total including mount, balance and disposal.

Reading the results

Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.

Hankook's Kinergy 4S2 and Vredestein's Quatrac sit in the same “premium-touring all-season” bracket, but they go about the job differently. Across 15 shared comparative tests (including Auto Bild, ADAC, Auto Express and Tyre Reviews), the Quatrac more often lands nearer the top of the table, while the Kinergy 4S2 tends to shine in specific areas-especially dry-road feel and, in several tests, winter metrics and longevity/value.

The data points to a consistent trade-off: the Hankook often feels sharper and more involving on dry roads (and can be very competitive in dry braking/handling depending on size), while the Vredestein more reliably stacks up strong wet security, aquaplaning resistance, and refinement (noise/comfort). If your year-round driving includes lots of rain and motorway standing water, Quatrac's strengths show up repeatedly; if you prioritise steering response, tread life, and cost-per-km, the Kinergy 4S2 makes a strong counter-case.

Conclusion

Over the full spread of tests, the Vredestein Quatrac is the more consistently high-performing “all-round safety” choice, which explains its clear edge in overall outcomes (11 test wins vs 3 for the Hankook). Its wet performance is the biggest differentiator: in Auto Bild 2025 (225/40 R18) wet braking was 43.9 m vs 49.2 m for the Hankook (a large ~10.8% gap), and it repeatedly leads in wet handling and aquaplaning metrics. It's also typically the quieter, more comfortable tyre (e.g., Tyre Reviews 2026/27 measured 69.25 dB for Quatrac vs 71.13 dB for Hankook), making it an easy recommendation for daily driving where refinement and wet confidence matter most.

The Hankook Kinergy 4S2 remains a compelling pick for drivers who value dry-road precision and running costs. It frequently scores well subjectively on steering/balance, can be quick on dry handling (e.g., Tyre Reviews 2026/27: 92.62 s vs 94.26 s), and it often delivers notably stronger wear/value in Auto Bild datasets (e.g., 2023: 60,289 km vs 43,091 km; 2025: 58,100 km vs 45,850 km, plus better “value” scores). The practical takeaway: choose Quatrac if you want the safer, calmer, more rain-biased all-season; choose Kinergy 4S2 if you want the sharper-feeling tyre with better cost-per-mile-accepting that wet braking can be the area where it gives away the most.

Where this data comes from

Finishing positions and measurements are transcribed from each published test. A test only counts here when both tyres ran in it, so every figure was recorded on the same car, size and day as the one it is compared to.

About the TR Score

The Tyre Reviews Score rates each tyre out of 10 from every independent test result and vetted owner review we hold, so two tyres can be compared even before a test has run them together.

Who does the testing

Every test published as a Tyre Reviews test is run by Jonathan Benson, who has been testing tyres independently since 2007.
