Data updated

Which should you buy?

Choose the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 if you regularly face real snow/compact winter roads and want the most confidence and comfort in true winter driving. Choose the Nokian Snowproof 3P if your winter is predominantly cold, wet tarmac (and you value short wet/dry stops, efficiency and-depending on size-very strong aquaplaning resistance), accepting that it's usually not the snow-performance benchmark and can feel less plush.

Where the UltraGrip Performance 3 is stronger

  • Best-in-class snow performance across all shared tests (4/4 wins in snow braking, traction and handling; often also top subjective snow scores)
  • Strong overall winter balance and high subjective comfort (e.g., Auto Bild comfort 9.6 vs 8.6; sport auto comfort 9 vs 6)
  • Generally strong aquaplaning performance in 2 of the 3 tests that measured it in detail (e.g., Auto Bild Sportscars +3.2% straight and +5.7% curved; Sport Auto +2.8% straight and +6.8% curved)
Everything on the UltraGrip Performance 3

Where the Snowproof 3P is stronger

  • Shorter dry and wet braking in most shared tests (won dry braking 3/4 and wet braking 3/4; e.g., Sport Auto wet braking 32.4m vs 33.5m)
  • Wet-road specialist characteristics when conditions are rainy (Sport Auto: best wet handling and top subjective wet score; Al Volante: class-leading aquaplaning)
  • Low rolling resistance advantage in most comparisons (won 3/4; e.g., Auto Bild Sportscars 7.8 vs 8.3 kg/t)

In each test the better of the two figures counts as 100% and the other as its share of it, so a 36 m stop against 34.2 m is 95%; each spoke averages the shared tests that recorded it. The scale stops at 95%: a point further in sits on the hub's edge, hollow. 3 measurements recorded in only one shared test are left off; every measurement is in the table further down.

Averages of the figures both tyres posted in the same tests. The gap is the average of each test's own gap, so figures from different cars and years are never mixed. Open a discipline for its measurements, and a measurement for every test's figure.

Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tyres shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

Scores beyond the shared tests

Drivers rate the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 very highly, praising its excellent grip and braking on dry and wet roads, strong traction in snow, and a quiet, comfortable, and predictable ride. Handling is often described as stable and confidence-inspiring, with several noting good highway manners. A minority mention weaker performance on pure ice and a softer, less sporty steering feel at the limit. Overall sentiment is strongly positive with only a few caveats.

  • strong dry grip and braking
  • excellent wet grip and braking
  • very good snow traction
  • quiet and comfortable ride
  • limited grip on pure ice compared to some rivals
  • softer steering feel and less sporty lateral grip at high speeds

This is exceptional tyre in winter i swapped it now with Michelin PA 5 which is even better on snow but lucks a bit on wet. But you cant go wrong with niether of those. I cant wait Michelin s to worn out so i can try pirelli.

Previous tyre: Dunlop Winter Sport 5 · Mostly motorway and short city trips, little snow in my area

I chose the Snowproof 3P for its strong wet braking and high-speed stability. My Dunlop Winter Sport 5 was excellent in snow but felt vague and wobbly in fast, sweeping motorway bends.

Comfort: Firm, much like a UHP summer tyre. If you're coming from UHP summers, you'll hardly notice a difference in ride comfort.
Noise: Very quiet, a big improvement over the Dunlop.
Steering: In slow corners with a lot of steering lock, it feels a little dull, but it still builds up plenty of grip. It's clearly most at home at higher speeds: excellent straight-line stability, and lane changes are easy and precise, without the vague, wobbly feel typical of many winter tyres.

Wet grip: On a similar level to my summer tyres.
Grip in general: Felt confident after only a few km, and the tyre feels better with every kilometre.

So far a great choice for drivers who prioritise motorway stability and wet safety. I'll update after the winter with experience in cold, wet and possibly snowy conditions.

Reading the results

Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.

Goodyear's UltraGrip Performance 3 and Nokian's Snowproof 3P target similar “Central European” winter conditions, but they come at the problem from different angles. The Goodyear is positioned as an ultra-high-performance winter tyre, aiming to keep steering response and snow capability high without giving away too much refinement. The Nokian is a premium-touring winter tyre with a clear bias toward wet-road security and efficiency.

Across four shared 2026-era tests (sizes spanning 205/45 R17 to 235/60 R18), the pattern is consistent: the Goodyear repeatedly tops the snow chapter and often scores strongly for subjective comfort and overall winter balance, while the Nokian frequently posts shorter dry and wet braking distances and, in some tests, looks like the wet-handling specialist. The headline question is whether you want maximum performance when roads turn white, or you prioritise wet braking/efficiency for the more common cold-and-wet commute.

Conclusion

Taken as a whole, UltraGrip Performance 3 is the more complete “winter performer” when snow is a real part of your season. It won the snow categories in every shared test (4/4 for snow braking, traction and handling), and that advantage is not just marginal in the tests that emphasise snow: for example in Al Volante it led snow traction by about 5.9% (4.02s vs 4.27s) and snow braking by about 3.7% (13.27m vs 13.78m). It also tends to be easier to live with day-to-day: Auto Bild Sportscars rated it joint most comfortable (9.6 vs 8.6), and sport auto gave it a huge subjective comfort edge (9 vs 6). The trade-off is that wet braking is rarely class-leading and, depending on test/size, aquaplaning can swing from a strength (Sport Auto) to a clear weakness (Al Volante).

Snowproof 3P's core case is wet-road safety margins and running efficiency, especially for climates where winter means cold rain far more often than packed snow. It won wet braking in three of the four shared tests and delivered meaningful gaps in some wet metrics-most notably in Al Volante, where it dominated aquaplaning (98.9 vs 90.5 km/h straight aquaplaning, and 101.4 vs 87.5 in the curved test). It also repeatedly shows low rolling resistance (won 3/4) and often excellent dry braking (won 3/4). Where it gives ground is dynamic handling feel and outright pace in mixed conditions: Auto Bild called it slowest on dry handling and second-slowest on wet handling (enough for a safety penalty), and it typically can't match the Goodyear's snow confidence when pushed.

Practical takeaway: if you regularly drive on properly snow-covered roads, the Goodyear's snow dominance and calmer comfort make it the safer “do-everything” winter choice. If your winter is mainly wet motorways, standing water, and cold urban braking events-with only occasional light snow-the Nokian's braking/efficiency bias can be the smarter fit, as long as you're happy to accept a less plush ride and (in some reports) less convincing handling pace.
