Kumho Winter Craft WP52 vs Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2

Kumho's Winter Craft WP52 and Pirelli's Cinturato Winter 2 target the same premium-touring winter niche, but they achieve it with notably different balance. Across 10 shared tests, Pirelli takes more overall wins (7 vs. 3), driven by stronger wet and snow ability, while Kumho repeatedly posts class-leading dry stops and a compelling value story. If you're torn between crisp dry-road confidence and all-weather security, this comparison will clarify the trade-offs.

While it might look like the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2 is better than the Kumho Winter Craft WP52 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Class-leading dry braking across sizes (e.g., 42.1 m vs. 43.6 m in ADAC 2024; 43.0 m vs. 44.5 m in Auto Bild 2024)
  • Strong value and lower purchase price (often 25-35% cheaper; repeated 'Value' wins)
  • Competitive longevity in several tests (e.g., 64,000 km predicted in ADAC 2023; low abrasion)
  • Sporty, secure feel in the dry with short cold-dry and often short wet stops in simple braking tests
  • Superior wet performance and aquaplaning reserves (e.g., +60% better lateral aqua in Auto Bild 2024; shorter wet braking in most tests)
  • Stronger snow/ice traction, braking and handling across the board
  • Quieter and more refined ride in multiple tests
  • Often lower rolling resistance and solid efficiency

Best Review for the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2
Given 86% 225/40 R18 on a combination of roads for 4,000 average miles
I bought this tyre last year after suggestions from my tyre dealer. I was looking for a good tyre for cold and rainy winters with some occasional trip to the mountains. These tyres were highly satisfactory in terms of dry and wet performance, plus they felt great in terms of subjective road feedback and handling. Car seems attached to the ground in all situations. Downsides are higher noise and fuel consumption, but I say this with respect to my summer tyres, which may not be a fair comparison. I only tried them on snow once and they were fine.

Conclusion

The pattern is clear: Pirelli is the safer bet when winter gets truly wet or wintry, while Kumho shines on cold, mostly dry roads at a lower price. Pirelli consistently brakes and handles better in the wet (up to 7.5% shorter wet stops and best-in-class aquaplaning resistance in multiple tests) and is more confidence-inspiring on snow and ice. Kumho counterpunches with some of the shortest dry braking distances on test (often 2-4% shorter than Pirelli) and outstanding value, and it can deliver excellent tread life depending on size and test.
Key Differences
  • Wet safety: Pirelli regularly stops shorter in the wet (up to 7.5% in Tyre Reviews 2023) and provides crisper wet handling.
  • Aquaplaning: Pirelli has markedly higher reserves (e.g., +59.6% lateral in Auto Bild 2024; repeated straight-line wins), while Kumho shows a clear weakness here.
  • Snow/ice: Pirelli edges Kumho in snow braking, traction and handling in most tests; ice braking advantages also appear (ADAC 2024).
  • Dry braking/feel: Kumho consistently brakes shorter on dry roads (often ~2-4% advantage) and feels sporty/stable in cold-dry conditions.
  • Comfort/noise: Pirelli tends to run quieter and more refined; Kumho is a bit louder in several tests.
  • Value/ownership: Kumho is substantially cheaper and often strong in wear/abrasion, while Pirelli can offer better efficiency (rolling resistance) depending on size.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
