2026 AvD Winter Tyre Test P12 of 15

The Toyo Observe EWS1 finished twelfth and is rated recommended. It is one of the best tyres in the test on wet and dry roads, but its snow results are a serious weakness for a winter tyre, a pattern seen in its other recent tests as well.

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 4 tests. Updated October 28, 2026.

The Toyo Observe EWS1 consistently brakes well on dry and wet roads but struggles on snow. Dry braking was first of 15 in AvD's 2026 winter test and second of 16 with ADAC in 2026, while wet braking was second with AvD and fourth of 22 in Auto Bild's 2025 full test. ADAC also praised precise dry steering and placed it third in both aquaplaning disciplines. Wear was favourable in two tests, fourth of 16 at a projected 53,700 km with ADAC and sixth of 20 with Auto Bild in 2025. Cost per kilometre was competitive too.

Snow is the repeated weakness, not an isolated poor result. AvD recorded the longest snow stop of 15 and criticised nervous handling. ADAC placed snow braking and traction 15th of 16 and found very early understeer or oversteer in snow handling, producing a failing overall grade despite 12th place. Auto Bild's 2025 full test put snow handling last of 21 and snow braking 21st of 22, with 16th of 20 overall. AvD still rated it recommended in 12th place, reflecting a different overall assessment rather than strong snow performance. Noise was near the bottom with ADAC and Auto Bild, and ADAC fuel consumption was second worst. Its strengths are therefore much clearer on snow-free roads than in the conditions a winter tyre must also handle.

The Toyo Observe EWS1 failed the test despite dry and wet performance close to the premium tyres. Its very poor snow handling produced a failing winter score, which under ADAC's rules sets the overall grade.

2025 Autobild Winter Tyre Test

Auto Bild 225/40 R18

The Toyo Observe Winter Sport 1 delivers surprisingly strong performance on wet and dry roads but suffers from significant weaknesses on snow that undermine its credibility as a winter tyre. On dry pavement, the tyre achieves an impressive second-place finish in braking, while wet braking is also competitive at fourth place. However, the snow performance is deeply concerning—the Toyo finishes dead last among all finalists in snow slalom, braking, handling, and near the bottom in traction. For a tyre marketed as a winter sport tyre, this failure to deliver adequate snow capability is disqualifying for many buyers. The tyre might work for drivers in regions with very mild winters who face mostly wet conditions, but anyone expecting real snow should look elsewhere. The imbalanced performance profile suggests Toyo prioritized dry and wet capability at the expense of winter-specific characteristics, resulting in a tyre that fails to meet the core requirements of its category.
