Bridgestone Potenza Sport vs Dunlop SportMaxx RT 2

This head-to-head pits two max-performance summer staples against each other: Bridgestone's Potenza Sport versus Dunlop's SportMaxx RT 2, both tested extensively in 225/40 R18 and 235/35 R19 sizes. Across six shared tests from Auto Bild, ADAC, EVO and others, the Bridgestone consistently finishes near the top, while the Dunlop delivers a balanced, comfort-leaning sporty package at a keener price.

The data shows a clear pattern: Potenza Sport dominates grip-led safety metrics-especially wet and dry braking-while the SportMaxx RT 2 counters with class-leading aquaplaning reserves, lower noise, and slightly better efficiency. Recent tests also highlight a notable shift for Bridgestone: markedly improved mileage and abrasion, addressing a traditional weakness.

Real World Driver Reviews

Bridgestone Potenza Sport Driver Reviews

Across 115 reviews, the Bridgestone Potenza Sport is praised for exceptional dry and wet grip, sharp steering response, strong braking, and confidence-inspiring handling, often rivaling or beating PS4/PS4S and PZ4. Many note it performs best when warmed and can be superb for spirited road use, with some citing good value. The most common drawbacks are rapid tread wear, higher noise and a firm ride, noticeable grip drop when cold, and poor durability on track abuse; a few also report slightly higher fuel consumption. Overall sentiment is strongly positive for performance-focused drivers, with caveats on longevity and comfort.

Dunlop SportMaxx RT 2 Driver Reviews

Most drivers find the Dunlop SportMaxx RT 2 confidence-inspiring with strong wet and dry grip, low noise, and good comfort, often noting solid aquaplaning resistance and decent wear for the category. However, many report soft sidewalls leading to vague or wobbly handling and reduced precision, and a minority cite rapid performance drop-off as they wear or isolated build issues. Overall sentiment skews positive given the large number of high-scoring reviews.

Best Review for the Bridgestone Potenza Sport
Given 81% 225/45 R17 on a combination of roads for 2,000 spirited miles
I have had these on the rear of my XFR for a few months now, it has the optional "R-S" size of 295/30/20. They get a hard life on a heavy >500bhp RWD car with quite relaxed electronics, and these are by far the best tyres I have used on the rear of an XFR - various models of which have been my daily driver for 6.5 years now (about 90k miles covered in that time). Traction is superb in wet and dry conditions, and resistance to aquaplaning has been good as well. It is slightly concerning they come with

Solid tyre. 12k miles done. Back 5.6, front 5.9 Mercedes 350 265/45/18 rear 245/50/18 front. Can't fault them. Will go for another set. Traction perfect, drives like a train. No skids, no aquaplaning so far. Wear ok/even. Average driving style. Got me out of trouble once... Hard breaking ABS on... Avoided dropped container.

Conclusion

If outright performance and safety margins are your priority, the Bridgestone Potenza Sport is the stronger choice. It wins all six shared comparisons overall, repeatedly delivering shorter stopping distances (often 6-12% better in both wet and dry) and sharper wet/dry handling, with newly competitive wear and strong value scores. That combination makes it a top-tier fit for spirited drivers and anyone frequently facing wet-weather braking scenarios.

The Dunlop SportMaxx RT 2 remains compelling for drivers who value calm, secure behavior in heavy rain and day-to-day refinement. It consistently leads aquaplaning tests (straight and curved), rides more comfortably, runs quieter, and can trim fuel use. If you encounter frequent standing water, prioritize cabin comfort, and want a softer-edged sporty feel at a friendlier price, the Dunlop fits well. The memorable takeaway: Bridgestone for maximum grip and braking confidence; Dunlop for rain resilience and comfort-first road manners.
Key Differences
  • Bridgestone stops shorter in wet and dry across all shared braking tests
  • Dunlop offers superior aquaplaning reserves (straight and curved) in every test
  • Bridgestone delivers sharper wet/dry handling; Dunlop favors stability and comfort
  • Noise: Dunlop runs quieter in multiple tests
  • Efficiency: Dunlop edges fuel use/rolling resistance in several results
  • Wear/value: Bridgestone now shows longer mileage and better price-per-1,000 km in recent tests

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
