Continental WinterContact TS 870 P vs Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6

This head-to-head pits Continental's ultra-high-performance WinterContact TS 870 P against the value-driven Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6. Across nine shared professional tests from 2022-2025 in popular 17-19 inch sizes, the Continental consistently ranks near the front while the Maxxis tends to the back of the pack. Both target winter road safety, but they approach it differently: Continental emphasizes dynamic precision and wet confidence; Maxxis focuses on price, noise comfort, and occasional aquaplaning strengths.

The data shows a decisive split in safety-critical braking and handling, especially in the wet where winter accidents are most common. Continental sweeps wet braking in all shared tests (often by 7-13%), pairs it with sharper handling feedback, and usually betters dry braking too. Maxxis counters with strong straight-line aquaplaning in several sizes, competitive snow braking in some tests, lower purchase prices, and at times better projected mileage or abrasion scores. The question becomes: is the lower upfront cost worth the notable compromises in wet grip and overall control?

nine wins

While it might look like the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is better than the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Best-in-test wet braking consistency; large safety margins in rain
  • Precise, predictable handling with strong feedback in dry and wet
  • Balanced winter performance with solid snow traction/handling
  • Lower rolling resistance than WP6 in most tests, aiding efficiency
  • Lower purchase price and strong value metrics in several tests
  • Frequent wins in straight-line aquaplaning and low noise levels
  • Occasionally competitive snow and ice braking results
  • In some sizes/tests, favorable projected mileage or abrasion

Best Review for the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P
Given 91% 225/45 R17 on a combination of roads for 2,500 spirited miles
Tire size: 225/55 R 17 101V, Car: Audi A6 C7 3.0 TFSI Quattro. I bought these tires after watching Tyrereviews winter tire test. After switching from old Michelin Alpin 4, the first thing I've noticed was... silence. The gap was huge. These tires are quieter than my summer tires- Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (245/45 R18 99Y). I've tested them in almost every weather conditions. They are great. The bigest disadvantage is maybe snow grip- good but not exceptional (new winter tires are better in mild climate), but they saved me 2-3 times during winter skidding :). Definitely worh to buy, especially... Continue reading this review using the link below

Best Review for the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6
Given 49% /45 R17 on a combination of roads for 5,000 average miles
I am not driving that spirited, especially on winter tyres - thus take my grip specifics with a grain of salt. In the grip category i don't see reason to complain. Sometimes i am in the mood to take an on-ramp near the limit of grip - behaviour here seems normal to me, the car tends to understeer. The previous winter tyres i bought the car with were 8 year old Marangoni Meteo HP and those sometimes tended to oversteer and had quite bad wet grip, so i replaced them with these. After one winter season the front tyres are severely more worn than the rears, i dont expect more than two seasons,... Continue reading this review using the link below

Conclusion

Continental's TS 870 P is the clear all-rounder and safety pick. It dominates wet braking (9/9 wins), leads wet/dry handling, and adds very good aquaplaning protection in multiple tests-critically, it stops markedly shorter in rain (e.g., 31 m vs 35.6 m; 35.6 m vs 41 m). On snow and ice the gap narrows, with occasional Maxxis wins in snow or ice braking, but Continental remains consistently composed and predictable. Rolling resistance is generally lower on the Continental, supporting efficiency, and its wear performance is competitive if not class-leading depending on test.

Maxxis' WP6 appeals on price and can deliver useful strengths: frequent straight-line aquaplaning wins, low external noise in some sizes, and in select tests better projected mileage or abrasion. However, its wet braking deficits are substantial and repeated, and subjective stability/precision trails the premium benchmark-consequences that testers repeatedly linked to reduced safety margins. For most drivers, the Continental is the safer, more confidence-inspiring choice. Budget-focused buyers in regions with frequent standing water but less persistent rain braking demands may consider the Maxxis, but only with full awareness of its wet stopping trade-offs.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking: Continental consistently shorter stopping distances (often 7-13% better).
  • Handling precision: Continental scores much higher subjectively in dry and wet; Maxxis shows delayed response and lower grip.
  • Aquaplaning: Maxxis often leads straight-line; Continental usually leads curved aquaplaning and overall wet control.
  • Dry braking: Continental shorter in every shared result.
  • Snow/ice: Mixed-Maxxis occasionally wins single metrics, but Continental is more rounded across traction/handling.
  • Efficiency and wear: Continental typically lower rolling resistance; Maxxis sometimes higher mileage/abrasion scores, varies by test.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
