In each test the better of the two figures counts as 100% and the other as its share of it, so a 36 m stop against 34.2 m is 95%; each spoke averages the shared tests that recorded it. The scale stops at 94%: a point further in sits on the hub's edge, hollow. 11 measurements recorded in only one shared test are left off; every measurement is in the table further down.

Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tyres shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

All 15 UltraGrip Performance 3 reviewsThis is exceptional tyre in winter i swapped it now with Michelin PA 5 which is even better on snow but lucks a bit on wet. But you cant go wrong with niether of those. I cant wait Michelin s to worn out so i can try pirelli.
Kumho Winter Craft WP52
- 68%from 9 reviews
- 63%would buy again
- 97,000 milesdriven by reviewers
Drivers find the Kumho Winter Craft WP52 to deliver strong dry grip and handling with generally good snow traction, making it a solid value purchase. Wet performance is adequate but not standout, with several users noting longer wet braking distances or a vague feel. Noise can be higher than average for some, though overall comfort is acceptable. Overall sentiment is moderately positive with a few recurring caveats in the wet.

All 9 Winter Craft WP52 reviewsThey were not at all suitable for my car, which has a diesel engine and higher torque. I drive mostly in the city, and they showed signs of fraying as early as the first winter. I experienced the same issue with Hankook tires in the past. For those who drive a more powerful car or one with high torque, I would recommend something that holds up better to conditions in cities with less snow.

Reading the results
Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.
This head-to-head pits two very different winter tyres against each other: Goodyear's UltraGrip Performance 3, an ultra-high-performance option aimed at drivers who demand top-tier control, versus Kumho's WinterCraft WP52, a value-led premium-touring tyre. Across eight shared tests from 2023-2025 and sizes spanning 16-18 inches, both tyres show competence, but their priorities diverge.
Goodyear consistently converts performance into results, winning 7 of the 8 comparisons and leading most safety-critical metrics, especially on wet and snow. Kumho counters with sharp pricing, decent dry manners in some sizes, and competitive wet braking in selected tests-enough to tempt budget-minded buyers who drive mainly in milder winter conditions.
Conclusion
The UltraGrip Performance 3 establishes a clear edge where it matters most in winter: wet control and snow capability. It repeatedly delivers shorter wet stops (e.g., −8% vs Kumho in 2023 225/45 R18) and stronger aquaplaning safety (often double-digit percentage gains), while also showing superior snow braking/traction and notably longer wear life (circa +25% in ADAC/Auto Bild). Its only real drawbacks are a higher purchase price and, in some tests, mid-pack rolling resistance rather than class-leading.
The WinterCraft WP52 offers solid all-round behaviour for the money, with occasional wins in dry and isolated wet-braking results (notably 205/55 R16 in 2024, −6.4% vs Goodyear) and generally low noise. However, its recurring weakness in aquaplaning and wet handling, plus lower mileage, limit its safety margin and long-term value in harsher, wetter winters. Choose Goodyear for the most secure four-season winter coverage and longevity; pick Kumho if price is paramount and your winter is mostly cold/dry with infrequent heavy rain.

Where this data comes from
Finishing positions and measurements are transcribed from each published test. A test only counts here when both tyres ran in it, so every figure was recorded on the same car, size and day as the one it is compared to.
About the TR Score
The Tyre Reviews Score rates each tyre out of 10 from every independent test result and vetted owner review we hold, so two tyres can be compared even before a test has run them together.
