Which should you buy?

Choose the Nokian Outpost nAT if you want the most confident all-terrain tyre for mixed climates-especially real winter use, frequent rain, and quieter daily driving-backed by top overall finishes and wins. Consider the Falken Wildpeak AT4W mainly if dry-road braking and general all-terrain use/durability are your priorities and you can tolerate clearly weaker wet aquaplaning and snow/ice performance.

Where the Wildpeak AT4W is stronger

  • Stronger dry braking in the shared 2026 test (44.08 m vs 45.27 m)
  • Slightly quicker dirt lap time in 2026 (75.18 s vs 75.43 s) indicating competent loose-surface pace
  • Decent all-round comfort/noise for an A/T tyre (mid-pack subjective scores)

Averages of the figures both tyres posted in the same tests. The gap is the average of each test's own gap, so figures from different cars and years are never mixed. Open a discipline for its measurements, and a measurement for every test's figure.

Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tyres shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

Scores beyond the shared tests

Falken Wildpeak AT4W

  • 78%from 11 reviews
  • 80%would buy again
  • 107,500 milesdriven by reviewers

Drivers generally rate the Falken Wildpeak AT4W highly, praising its strong off-road capability and confident dry-road manners, with many also noting surprisingly low noise and good overall comfort for an all-terrain tyre. Wet traction is often described as good to very good, and several users report solid treadwear so far. A notable minority, however, say snow/ice performance (especially braking and slick city winter conditions) doesn't meet expectations for a 3PMS-rated tyre, with a few planning to switch to a dedicated winter setup.

  • Excellent off-road traction (dirt/rock/sand/gravel/mud)
  • Strong dry-road grip and stable handling
  • Generally good wet traction for an all-terrain tyre
  • Low road noise/quiet for an A/T tyre
  • Snow and ice performance not as strong as expected (especially braking/traction on slick winter surfaces)

Nokian Outpost nAT

  • 80%from 19 reviews
  • 72%would buy again
  • 210,120 milesdriven by reviewers

Owners rate the Nokian Outpost nAT highly overall, with most praising its standout snow traction and secure all-round grip for an all-terrain tyre. Around two thirds of owners mention road noise, and opinions are split, though it leans slightly towards being louder or more 'droney' at certain speeds. Comfort is generally well regarded, and those who use it off-road report consistently strong traction, while a noticeable minority mention mixed results for rolling resistance (some seeing little change, others a small mpg hit).

  • Excellent snow traction for an all-terrain tyre
  • Strong off-road traction on mud and rough tracks
  • Comfortable ride that handles potholes and poor surfaces well
  • Confidence-inspiring wet grip
  • Road noise can be noticeable, with a drone or hum for some
  • Rolling resistance/fuel economy impact is inconsistent and can drop mpg
  • Slightly reduced steering precision compared with more road-focused tyres

I bought LT version instead of P version to get a little more tread depth and load capability. They are pleasant for an AT tire. A little bit of noise around 55 MPH. They perform well in all types of road surfaces and conditions except for ice which is to be expected from an AT tire. Southern Ontario Canada is the location they are used in. City driving affected fuel mileage, but highway driving, not so much. Mounted on a 2019 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x. The only tire I can compare them to would be the factory equipped P series Hankook AT-M. The Nokians are better in every way except for comfort, noise and mileage which is to be expected when comparing an LT AT tire to a P series all weather tire.

Reading the results

Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.

Falken's Wildpeak AT4W and Nokian's Outpost nAT are both 3PMSF-rated, all-season all-terrain tyres aimed at SUV and 4x4 owners who want one set to cover daily road miles and genuine off-road use. On paper they sit in the same “do-it-all” niche, but the shared test data (both in 265/70 R17) shows they prioritize very different parts of the performance envelope.

Across two independent professional group tests-one focused on overall all-terrain balance (2026) and one heavily weighted to winter (2025)-the Nokian consistently lands near the top (2/8 with a “Highly Recommended” award, then 1/6 as the winter test winner). The Falken, by contrast, places in the bottom half (6/8 and 5/6). The interesting twist is that the Falken's best measurable advantage shows up in dry braking, while the Nokian builds its lead through winter capability, aquaplaning resistance, and day-to-day refinement.

Conclusion

If you need a single all-terrain tyre that stays composed when conditions turn ugly, the Nokian Outpost nAT is the clear pick from these results. It dominates the winter metrics in both tests-snow braking (e.g., 13.5 m vs 16.21 m in 2026; 21.79 m vs 23.57 m in 2025), traction, and handling-and pairs that with a major safety advantage in standing water, delivering the best straight-line aquaplaning speed in the 2026 test (105.8 km/h vs the Falken's 95.4 km/h, a ~10.9% gap). It also scores higher subjectively for comfort and noise, and edges value on the provided price index.

The Falken Wildpeak AT4W's case rests mainly on dry-road stopping and acceptable dirt performance. It posts the better dry braking number in the 2026 test (44.08 m vs 45.27 m), and it narrowly wins the dirt lap time (75.18 s vs 75.43 s) in a very tight group. However, the broader pattern is hard to ignore: it trails meaningfully in wet handling and is repeatedly at the back in snow/ice measures, with test notes suggesting the LT version in particular has traded winter grip for wear resistance. Practical takeaway: if your driving includes real winter, frequent heavy rain, or you value quiet/refined road manners, the Outpost nAT is the smarter and safer all-rounder; the AT4W only makes sense if your priority is dry braking plus general all-terrain use and you can accept weaker wet/winter security.

Where this data comes from

Finishing positions and measurements are transcribed from each published test. A test only counts here when both tyres ran in it, so every figure was recorded on the same car, size and day as the one it is compared to.

About the TR Score

The Tyre Reviews Score rates each tyre out of 10 from every independent test result and vetted owner review we hold, so two tyres can be compared even before a test has run them together.

Who does the testing

Every test published as a Tyre Reviews test is run by Jonathan Benson, who has been testing tyres independently since 2007.
