Nexen WinGuard WinSpike 3
The Nexen WinGuard WinSpike 3 is a studded winter tyre with good wet-road braking, handling and aquaplaning resistance in its one independent test. Weak snow braking and traction, sudden front-grip loss on winter surfaces and intrusive noise are its main compromises.
The Nexen WinGuard WinSpike 3's single independent test reveals a stronger asphalt performance than its sixth-of-eight overall finish suggests. Vi Bilagare's 2025 studded comparison placed it second for wet braking, wet handling and straight aquaplaning resistance, with a wet lap only 0.2% slower than best. Dry braking was third, 2.2% longer than best, and the testers praised its braking and cornering on asphalt. These strengths may appeal where wet-road behaviour matters, but remain findings from one size and test.
Snow performance was much weaker within the same field. Braking and traction were last, while handling was seventh of eight. More concerning than the placings alone was the testers' account of sudden front-grip loss with little warning on winter surfaces. Ice braking and acceleration also trailed the leaders substantially. Noise was the highest measured and described as intrusive. For a studded winter tyre, the asphalt results therefore come with substantial compromises in snow grip, predictable behaviour and refinement.

The Nexen WinGuard WinSpike 3 features the hardest rubber compound in the test, resulting in significant grip challenges on winter surfaces, particularly struggling with snow adhesion compared to other test participants. The grip balance is heavily understeer-biased, with the front wheels consistently losing grip first in a sudden, unpredictable manner that provides little warning to the driver. Safety levels improve considerably on asphalt where aquaplaning resistance is good and both braking distances and cornering behavior maintain high standards, especially on wet surfaces. However, the tyre's major drawback is an unacceptably high noise level that becomes intrusive, making it the loudest option in the test.
