Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tyres shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

Across 31 reviews, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV is most often praised as a high-confidence summer performance tyre with standout wet and dry grip, strong braking, and reassuring aquaplaning resistance. Many drivers also report stable, predictable handling and a generally comfortable ride, with several noting good mileage for a UHP SUV tyre. The most repeated downsides are increased road noise as the tyre wears, wear rate/mileage variability (some seeing rapid wear), and a subset reporting softer sidewalls that dull turn-in feel; a few also note higher rolling resistance/fuel or EV energy consumption and premium pricing.
- Excellent wet and dry grip
- Very strong, stable braking performance
- High aquaplaning resistance in heavy rain/standing water
- Confident, predictable handling and stability
- Road noise (often increases noticeably with wear or at higher speeds)
- Treadwear/mileage can be faster than expected or inconsistent for some users
- Soft sidewalls/less sharp turn-in or wobbly feel at the limit for some setups

All 38 Pilot Sport 4 SUV reviewsReplacing Pirelli Scorpions, the Michelins are a definite step up. In the dry the steering is far more precise, grip levels high and behavior at the limit clean and benign. Stopping distances are commendably short with excellent stability. If anything they are even more impressive in the wet with exceptionally strong lateral grip and progressive behavior at the limit. They are very resistant to
aquaplaning on flooded motorways. Road noise and rolling comfort are good but not exceptional. As I use extreme winter tyres
for half the year I have no idea how they would fare in snow or ice although they show commendably good behavior in low
temperatures unlike some summer tyres. So far they are wearing well. For on road use in above freezing conditions I strongly
recommend these tyres as being worth the high price and would happily buy again.
Pirelli Scorpion

All 5 Scorpion reviewsFirstly, these are great tires with excellent grip, making them a solid upgrade from my old PremiumContact 6s. Secondly, they make a noticeable howling noise at low speeds up to 60 km/h. I expected less noise from premium tires, but they probably just need a bit more breaking in.

Reading the results
Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.
This matchup contrasts two premium summer SUV tyres with different design priorities. Michelin's Pilot Sport 4 SUV is a max-performance option aimed at grip, precision and wet-weather security, while Pirelli's Scorpion focuses on comfort, low noise and efficiency as a premium-touring choice. Across three recent independent tests in 18-19 inch SUV fitments, both tyres performed strongly but in distinct ways.
The data shows Michelin repeatedly leading in wet performance and dynamic control, including aquaplaning resistance, while Pirelli counters with class-leading refinement, lower rolling resistance and competitive dry stopping. Off-road light-duty capability is shared, with niche strengths trading places depending on surface.
Conclusion
Overall, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV is the dynamic and safety leader, winning 2 of 3 tests and sweeping the wet disciplines across all shared tests. It delivers the shortest wet stops, the best wet handling and the strongest aquaplaning margins, plus crisp steering-ideal for confident driving and variable summer weather. The trade-offs are higher price, elevated exterior noise in some tests and middling ride comfort.
The Pirelli Scorpion places higher once (2nd overall at AutoBild) on the strength of outstanding noise/comfort, low rolling resistance and solid braking-particularly strong in dry braking once and consistently quiet. It's the better choice for refinement, efficiency and relaxed touring, while still competent in the wet. In short: pick Michelin for grip-first safety and precision; pick Pirelli for comfort, quiet and fuel savings.

Where this data comes from
Finishing positions and measurements are transcribed from each published test. A test only counts here when both tyres ran in it, so every figure was recorded on the same car, size and day as the one it is compared to.
About the TR Score
The Tyre Reviews Score rates each tyre out of 10 from every independent test result and vetted owner review we hold, so two tyres can be compared even before a test has run them together.
Who does the testing
Every test published as a Tyre Reviews test is run by Jonathan Benson, who has been testing tyres independently since 2007.
