Data updated

Which should you buy?

Choose the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 if you want the safest, most complete winter tyre-especially if you drive in frequent rain, mixed slush/wet, or at motorway speeds where wet braking and wet handling matter most. Consider the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 only if purchase price is the overriding priority and you particularly value aquaplaning resistance, while accepting notably longer wet braking distances and generally lower all-round performance.

Where the UltraGrip Performance 3 is stronger

  • Consistently class-leading wet braking across all shared tests (often 7-20%+ shorter stops, e.g., 49.3 m vs 56.8 m in AZ 2025)
  • Strong overall winter balance with frequent top rankings (e.g., 1st/31 ADAC 2025; 3rd/12 Auto Bild Sportscars 2026)
  • Generally superior snow performance (traction/handling/slalom advantages; notably strong in Auto Bild Sportscars 2026)

Where the Premitra Snow WP6 is stronger

  • Very competitive aquaplaning resistance in key tests (near the top in Auto Bild Sportscars 2026; wins straight/curved aquaplaning in multiple Auto Bild datasets)
  • Lower upfront cost/value positioning (cheapest/second-cheapest in some tests; wins value metric in AZ 2025)
  • Can be acceptable on snow in some test environments (Auto Express 2026 noted snow as its strongest surface relative to its other results)

Wins count every measurement the shared tests recorded for both tyres; a tick marks the tyre ahead on that line. Subjective driver scores count as wins but are never averaged, because each test uses its own scale.

Each row is one published test in which both tyres ran on the same car, in the same size, on the same day. The line is the whole field, winner on the left.

Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tyres shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

This is exceptional tyre in winter i swapped it now with Michelin PA 5 which is even better on snow but lucks a bit on wet. But you cant go wrong with niether of those. I cant wait Michelin s to worn out so i can try pirelli.

Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6

  • 71%from 8 reviews
  • 63%would buy again
  • 30,000 milesdriven by reviewers

Drivers generally report the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 as a strong-performing winter tyre, with frequent praise for confident grip in snow/ice and capable wet-road handling, especially considering the price. Most high-scoring reviews are very satisfied and would buy it again. A smaller minority report notable road noise/humming, sometimes described as a growl or drone, which can undermine overall comfort.

  • strong snow traction
  • good ice grip
  • confident wet handling/grip
  • good value for money
  • increased road noise/humming

The Maxxis WP6 is good enough for normal Dutch winter driving. Straight-line aquaplaning resistance is good and overall grip levels are acceptable.

However, on dry and wet roads the tyres lack feedback when cornering. Steering feel is vague and the car feels slightly floaty, especially in faster bends and motorway exits.

Snow traction is good and steering on snow is acceptable. On icy roads the rear of the car felt unstable, with a subtle side-to-side movement.

Previously driven on Firestone Winterhawk 2, Michelin Alpin A4 and Dunlop Winter Sport 5. Of those, the Dunlop offered the best overall balance and driver confidence.

Overall I’m satisfied, but I would not buy them again. Next time I would try the Kumho WP52 or return to a premium brand.

Reading the results

Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.

This is a classic “premium winter performance” matchup: the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 (UHP winter) is engineered to deliver high grip and high stability across the full winter envelope, while the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 (premium-touring winter, often priced like a budget option in tests) tends to trade outright performance for cost and, in some conditions, efficiency.

Across 10 shared independent tests in multiple sizes (16" through 19"), the pattern is extremely consistent: Goodyear ranks near the top of the field (including multiple outright wins), while the Maxxis typically sits in the lower half. The most important story isn't a single metric-it's the repeatability of the gaps, especially in wet braking, and how that translates into real-world safety margins.

That said, the WP6 does show a clear, repeatable “specialty”: aquaplaning resistance can be very good, and its purchase price/value score is often attractive. The comparison therefore comes down to whether you're optimizing for maximum all-round winter capability (Goodyear) or lowest upfront spend with a notable deep-water strength (Maxxis).

Conclusion

On the evidence of the shared tests, the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance 3 is the decisively stronger tyre overall-10 shared tests, 10 times ahead on overall ranking, including wins such as 1st/10 in AZ (2025) and 1st/31 in ADAC (2025). The biggest, most meaningful separator is wet braking: Goodyear beats Maxxis in every shared wet-braking result, often by large margins (e.g., 49.3 m vs 56.8 m in AZ 2025, and 32.6 m vs 41.0 m in the 2025 52-set braking test). Those are “stopping-a-car-lengths-earlier” differences that directly affect collision avoidance, and they're reinforced by Goodyear's typically stronger wet handling/circle performance.

In snow, Goodyear is also usually ahead (traction, handling, slalom), though the exact gap varies by test. Auto Bild Sportscars (2026) is particularly damning for the Maxxis on snow (noted as the weakest on snow with a safety penalty), whereas Auto Express (2026) found the WP6 more “mid-pack” on snow but still clearly behind the Goodyear across the snow metrics. Where the Maxxis does fight back is aquaplaning: it wins straight and/or curved aquaplaning in several Auto Bild tests (e.g., Sportscars 2026 and SUV 2024), sometimes ranking near the very best in those specific sub-tests.

Value is the WP6's main argument-often among the cheapest tyres tested and occasionally scoring well on efficiency-related metrics (e.g., lowest fuel consumption in ADAC 2025, and better rolling resistance in AZ 2025). But the repeated wet-braking deficit is too large to frame as a minor compromise; it's a fundamental performance gap. The practical takeaway: if you want one winter tyre that you can trust when conditions swing between cold wet highways, slush, and snow-especially at higher speeds-the Goodyear is the safer, more complete package. The Maxxis only makes sense when budget is the overriding constraint and your risk tolerance is higher, with the consolation that its aquaplaning resistance can be a genuine plus in heavy rain.

Where this data comes from

Finishing positions and measurements are transcribed from each published test. A test only counts here when both tyres ran in it, so every figure was recorded on the same car, size and day as the one it is compared to.

About the TR Score

The Tyre Reviews Score rates each tyre out of 10 from every independent test result and vetted owner review we hold, so two tyres can be compared even before a test has run them together.
