Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 vs Vredestein Wintrac Pro

This head-to-head pits two UHP winter staples against each other: Michelin's Pilot Alpin 5 versus Vredestein's Wintrac Pro. Across 16 shared professional tests, the Michelin repeatedly lands on the podium-often at the very top-while the Vredestein stakes its case on value and selective wet strengths. Both target drivers of performance-oriented passenger cars who demand confidence across cold, mixed conditions.

The data show a clear pattern: Michelin dominates dry and snow disciplines with shorter braking, higher cornering speeds, and stronger traction, while also keeping noise low and wear impressively high. Vredestein counters with competitive-and sometimes class-leading-wet braking and aquaplaning resistance in specific tests, plus a much lower purchase price. The question becomes whether outright performance or budget-led balance matters more for your winter driving.

Test Results

Independent comparison tyre tests are the best source of data to get tyre information from, and the good news is there have been sixteen tests which compare both tyres directly!

Summary of sixteen total tests comparing both tyres directly
TyreTest WinsPerformance
Michelin Pilot Alpin 5sixteen
sixteen wins

While it might look like the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 is better than the Vredestein Wintrac Pro purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Class-leading snow performance: repeated wins in braking, traction, and handling
  • Consistently short dry braking and precise dry handling
  • Low noise, good comfort, and among the best wear/mileage
  • Often lower rolling resistance than rivals in segment
  • Strong wet performance in several tests (wet braking and aquaplaning)
  • Sporty, stable feel when conditions are wet
  • Significantly lower purchase price and good value
  • Occasionally competitive aquaplaning resistance versus class leaders

Dry Braking

Looking at data from twelve tyre tests, the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 was better during twelve dry braking tests. On average the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 stopped the vehicle in 3.81% less distance than the Vredestein Wintrac Pro.

Real World Driver Reviews

Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 Driver Reviews

Drivers largely praise the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 for delivering near-summer-tyre performance in winter, with excellent dry and wet grip, precise handling, and strong stability. Snow traction is reported as confidently good (especially on packed or light snow), and several high-scoring reviews note impressive tread life. However, multiple users caution that ice traction and braking are weaker than dedicated snow/ice tyres, and the firm sidewall can make the ride feel harsh for some. Overall sentiment is strongly positive, especially for moderate winters and performance-oriented driving.

Vredestein Wintrac Pro Driver Reviews

Most drivers report the Vredestein Wintrac Pro delivers excellent wet and dry grip with confident handling and strong snow performance, often rivaling summer tyres for steering feel while remaining quiet and comfortable. A minority note weaknesses on ice and some increased rolling resistance/fuel use, with occasional soft sidewall feel on powerful cars; overall sentiment is strongly positive given high scores and frequent praise for wear and value.

Best Review for the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5
Given 81% 205/60 R16 H on mostly country roads for 76,000 spirited miles
This is by far the best winter I have used. I live in the alps and use every weekend to go from 300m to 1740m ski ressort. I have needed to chain up even with 30cm snow. On the packed snow/ice no issues even from standing start on gradient. Knowing the road I push the corners and straights with the knowledge they do not let me down

Best Review for the Vredestein Wintrac Pro
Given 78% 255/35 R19 on mostly country roads for 5,000 spirited miles
Purchased in sizes 225/40 r19y front and 255/35 r19y rear for Jaguar xe awd. Excellent on dry and wet, very good on fresh snow, on ice I don't know. They are silent and with a soft compound. They may not excel in one category, but they are very homogeneous and suitable for all weather conditions. Very stable at high speeds. Honestly I would buy them again.

Conclusion

Michelin's Pilot Alpin 5 is the more complete performer. It wins 16/16 overall comparisons, leads convincingly in dry and snow (12/12 dry handling wins; 13/14 snow braking; 12/12 snow handling), and frequently pairs that grip with low noise, good comfort, and notably strong wear-offsetting some of its higher purchase price over the life of the tyre. In mixed real-world winter use with frequent cold, dry, and snowy miles, Michelin delivers the most consistent safety margin and driver confidence.

Vredestein's Wintrac Pro is the value play. It can edge Michelin in certain wet metrics (notably some wet braking and curved aquaplaning results), often costs 20-30% less, and can feel stable and sporty when conditions suit. If your winters skew wet and you're cost-sensitive, it's a credible, balanced alternative. For most drivers seeking the safest, broadest capability-especially where snow and cold dry roads are common-the Michelin is the decisive choice.
Key Differences
  • Michelin wins every overall test head-to-head (16/16), indicating broader consistency
  • Snow capability: Michelin holds clear, repeated margins in braking, traction, and handling
  • Dry road safety: Michelin stops shorter and carries higher average speeds in handling
  • Wet variability: Vredestein sometimes out-brakes Michelin in the wet and resists aquaplaning better in curved tests
  • Efficiency/longevity: Michelin generally shows lower noise and better wear; rolling resistance often favors Michelin
  • Price/value: Vredestein is typically 20-30% cheaper, improving upfront affordability and cost-per-1,000 km in some tests

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
