The full test

The evidence behind the verdict

The 2022 Auto Bild Sports Car UHP Winter Tyre Test has tested nine popular performance winter tyres in the large 245/40 R19 size using a Cupra Formenta.

Test setup & methodology

The test setting, the conditions recorded and how the results contribute to the score.

Recorded test conditions

Recorded test conditions

Dry Braking

Wet Braking
100 → 0 km/h
Snow Braking
50 → 0 km/h

Dry

As usual, the reference summer tyre was the best in the dry, however it seems that in these larger tyre sizes the summer tyre has a bigger than usual lead, stopping the car nearly 5 meters shorter than the best winter tyre, which was budget Minerva IcePlus S210. There was a 2.1 meter spread between the best and the worst winter tyre.

Dry Braking

44 m +1.60 m 25 km/h
44.4 m +2.00 m 28 km/h
44.5 m +2.10 m 28 km/h

The difference between best and worst was 18.7% (7 m ≈ 1.6 Car Lengths). From 130 km/h, the Maxxis Premitra Snow WP6 would still be travelling at 28 km/h when the Minerva IcePlus S210 had stopped.

Residual speed is calculated from the measured braking distances, assuming constant deceleration; it is not a separate measurement.

The summer tyre kept the advantage during the dry handling test, with the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 being the best of the winter tyres.

All the tyres in the Dry Handling test finished less than 3% apart.

Wet

The summer tyres advantage remained during the wet braking test, leading the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 by 3.1 meters.

The difference between best and worst was 38.3% (15.8 m ≈ 3.5 Car Lengths). From 130 km/h, the Minerva IcePlus S210 would still be travelling at 61 km/h when the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 had stopped.

Residual speed is calculated from the measured braking distances, assuming constant deceleration; it is not a separate measurement.

Wet handing was led by the Vredestein Wintrac Pro, which is a tyre which usually does well during the wet handling tests.

Snow

Naturally the summer tyre had no ability in any of the snow tests. The Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 led the way in snow braking, closely followed by the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005.

Adjust the assumptions

Calculated estimates, not additional measurements. Use the controls to explore the assumptions.

19,000 km
£1.45/L
Estimates based on typical driving conditions. Rolling resistance accounts for approximately 20% of IC vehicle fuel consumption and 25% of EV energy consumption. Actual savings vary based on driving style, vehicle weight, road conditions, and tyre age. For comparative purposes only. Lifetime savings based on a 40,000km / 25,000 mile tread life.

As we've come to expect, the Michelin and Continental were the most expensive tyres on test.

Interesting to see how the wintracs move up and down in different tests. I initially went for pilot alpin 5 for our GLE, but there was an issue with delivery so had to settle with the wintracs (and Nokians weren’t available in 315/40/21 and 275/45/21). Excited to see how they will perform in a lower Scandinavia winter.

Will you do a large SUV/wide tire review next year? Maybe a winter edition of the wide vs narrow tire as well?

I would also like to see eg the LM005, PA5, x-ice and R5 in the same test. There are a lot of tests in Scandinavia where they mock the “European” winter tires and say they are useless here and compare them to summer tires. It would be nice to see how they stack up against each other. Would make it easier for people to chose the right tire I think, as I’ve also started to pick tires that have better wet grip than snow and ice since there are only a few days of proper snow before they salt it all away.
