Performance Analysis

Drawn from 12 tests. Updated September 21, 2025.

The ContiSportContact 5 P shows consistently elite UHP performance with an average overall position of 2.1 across 12 tests, including multiple overall wins (2010-2017) and frequent podiums. It excels in both dry and wet braking, and regularly delivers balanced handling, evidenced by repeated top-two finishes and test-winning all-round capability. Awards and editor comments repeatedly cite its comprehensive performance envelope.

A few outliers appear in specific handling-focused European tests where precision and ultimate lap pace slightly trailed the very best, and one older Sport Auto result (7/9 in 2012) marks a notable dip. Still, the prevailing pattern is of a benchmark tyre in its era, especially in braking and all-conditions competence.

In 2011 the 5P won our tyre test on a Focus RS and Scirocco R, and the Continental is equally good on a Mustang! On the wet track the car has good grip, and starts to slide smoothly and predictably. In the dry, the tyre doesn't quite have the control accuracy as the Michelin or Pirelli, but it has a good time none the less. No problems with wear, and good comfort make for a lovely tyre for everyday use on high speed cars.

2012 Sport Auto Summer Tyre Test

Sport Auto 235/35 R19

The Continental Sport Contact 5P follows the usual Continental methodology - braking comes first. This leaves the Sport Contact 5P excellent in both the wet and the dry braking tests and has an extremely strong aquaplaning result. On the track there is a slight delay to the Continentals steering, and moderate understeer as you push on.

2011 Autoreview Max Performance Summer Tyre Test

Auto Review 235/35 R19

The SportContact 5P is a very balanced tyre, scoring strongly in both the wet and dry. The main achievement of the 5P is the excellent resistance to aquaplaning with excennelt braking characteristics on dry roads. At the limit of grip in the wet, the tyre starts sliding gently and only needs small steering angles to get back in line. The speed on the track isn't the highest, but it's not far off the leader, just 0.6 seconds behind in the dry.

While the Continental matched the Goodyear for lateral grip, it couldn't match the Asymmetric 2 under braking or more importantly, subjective feel. In the dry the Conti offered a reasonable level of feedback but poor turn in. Initial bite was good, but then the car seemed to pause for a split second as the tyre rolled under the car and obtained required slip angle - this also caused mid corner corrections to be somewhat vague. In the wet, with reduced cornering forces the Conti was much closer to the Goodyear and was extremely close. Past the limit, the 5P felt easy to control, and was an enjoyable tyre to slide.
