Hankook Ventus Prime 4 vs Toyo Proxes Comfort

This matchup pits two summer premium-touring staples against each other: Hankook's Ventus Prime 4 and Toyo's Proxes Comfort. Both target everyday drivers who want confident dry/wet performance, refinement, and value, but they go about it differently. Across eight shared tests from 2022-2024 and a wide spread of sizes, patterns emerge that clarify which tyre suits which driver.

The Hankook consistently lands near the sharp end of rankings with strong braking performance-especially in the wet-plus tidy handling and low rolling resistance. Toyo counters with a quieter, more supple character, competitive aquaplaning resistance, and often a lower purchase price, though its wet braking and wear lag behind Hankook in most tests.

While it might look like the Hankook Ventus Prime 4 is better than the Toyo Proxes Comfort purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Consistently shorter wet and dry braking (e.g., up to ~12% shorter wet in ADAC 2023)
  • Balanced, secure handling on wet and dry with sporty steering feel
  • Lower rolling resistance in most tests (fuel-saving)
  • Stronger wear and abrasion results (better longevity/value)
  • Low external noise and good ride comfort
  • Competitive aquaplaning resistance (often stronger in curved/straight aqua)
  • Often lower purchase price in several market/tests
  • Light tyre weight and very low rolling resistance in some tests

Dry Braking

Looking at data from eight tyre tests, the Hankook Ventus Prime 4 was better during seven dry braking tests. On average the Hankook Ventus Prime 4 stopped the vehicle in 0.98% less distance than the Toyo Proxes Comfort.

Real World Driver Reviews

Hankook Ventus Prime 4 Driver Reviews

Most drivers rate the Hankook Ventus Prime 4 highly for its quiet, comfortable ride, strong dry grip, confident wet performance (especially when new), and excellent value versus premium rivals. Handling stability and braking inspire confidence across varied conditions, with many noting a step up in refinement and noise compared to previous tyres. A recurring downside is faster-than-expected wear, with multiple reports of wet grip and overall performance declining as tread depth drops, alongside noise increasing as the tyre ages. Overall sentiment is strongly positive, with durability-related concerns being the main caveat.

Best Review for the Toyo Proxes Comfort
Given 70% 195/55 R16 on mostly motorways for 500 easy going miles
I chose the Toyo Proxes Comfort because they had great price and Wet rating A. I have two on the rear and on the front I have two Michelin Energy Saver +. I can't really tell the difference from before when I had four of the above mentioned Michelin. They seem too have decent dry grip and feel good on wet too. I drive quite carefully and rarely push to the limit, although I must say I've done a couple of roundabouts and turns in a speedy manner without losing grip on the rear. So far so good, will see on the long run. For now, it's buy again

Conclusion

Across the test body, Hankook is the more complete all-rounder. It repeatedly stops shorter-most notably in wet braking where gaps of 6-12% show up in multiple tests-handles neutrally, and often delivers better fuel efficiency and longer tread life. That combination underpins its higher overall placings (7 test wins vs. 0 for Toyo) and stronger value scores despite not always being the cheapest sticker price.

Toyo appeals if comfort, quietness, and aquaplaning margins rank highest, and if upfront price is the priority. However, its extended wet braking and average wear are meaningful trade-offs. If you drive in mixed or wet climates or value safety-critical stopping distances, choose the Hankook. If your use is mostly urban/motorway in lighter rain with a focus on cabin serenity and price, the Toyo remains a sensible, budget-friendly option.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking: Hankook typically stops shorter (e.g., 34.1 m vs 36.5 m; 35.8 m vs 40.6 m).
  • Handling character: Hankook neutral/sportier; Toyo can feel softer with delayed response.
  • Aquaplaning: Toyo often edges Hankook in straight/curved aqua metrics.
  • Noise/comfort: Toyo quieter on average; Hankook sometimes louder but composed.
  • Efficiency and wear: Hankook frequently lower rolling resistance and better mileage/abrasion; Toyo shows lower RR in select tests but generally lower tread life.
  • Value: Hankook often delivers better cost-per-1000 km despite Toyo's lower sticker price in several sizes.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
