The full test

The evidence behind the verdict

Sadly Tyre Reviews isn't performing an SUV summer tyre test this year, but luckily the German publication AutoBild once again have us covered if you want to know what the best tyre is for your SUV!

This year AutoBild tested twelve SUV tyres for the crossover SUV segment in the 225/65 R17 tyre size.

As usual, all the tyres were tested in the dry and wet, and had their rolling resistance and noise / comfort levels graded, but as this category of tyre is also intended for some "light off-roading" they tested the twelve SUV tyres in mud, sand, dirt and even on wet grass! This means this really is the best test this year you show you what the best tyre is for your SUV!

There's a LOT of data from this test, so we won't preface anymore - This is how the best twelve SUV tyres fared in the dry, wet, gravel, mud, dirt and sand!

Test setup & methodology

The test setting, the conditions recorded and how the results contribute to the score.

Recorded test conditions

Recorded test conditions

Dry Braking
100 → 0 km/h
Wet Braking
100 → 0 km/h

Wet

Wet braking was led by the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV. The Michelin looks a little out of place in this test, the Pilot Sport 4 SUV is an ultra high performance summer tyre, and all the other tyres in the test are more touring / comfort bias tyres. Perhaps the Michelin Primacy 4 would have been a better match for the test, but this does give us an excellent insight into the differences between the two categories of tyres.

It should come as no surprise that the Aplus A919 in last place was the cheapest tyre on test, but it might be a surprise that the Cooper Zeon 4XS Sport also struggled to stop the car.

Wet Braking

55 m +5.10 m 40 km/h
61.1 m +11.20 m 56 km/h
63.6 m +13.70 m 60 km/h

The difference between best and worst was 27.5% (13.7 m ≈ 3 Car Lengths). From 130 km/h, the Aplus A919 would still be travelling at 60 km/h when the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 SUV had stopped.

Residual speed is calculated from the measured braking distances, assuming constant deceleration; it is not a separate measurement.

The Michelin was also the fastest around the wet handling lap, beating the new Bridgestone Turanza 6.

The next three data points are gravel, sand and mud traction tests, measured as a pulling force. It's important to note that offroad testing is some of the hardest testing in the world, none more so than mud, so worry less about the precise order and more about general trends.

These general trends are that the budget Aplus might not be able to grip on wet roads, but is great on wet grass and in mud but not sand. The General Grabber GT Plus was best in sand but poor on grass... it seems even general trends are difficult with offroad testing!

Adjust the assumptions

Calculated estimates, not additional measurements. Use the controls to explore the assumptions.

19,000 km
£1.45/L
Estimates based on typical driving conditions. Rolling resistance accounts for approximately 20% of IC vehicle fuel consumption and 25% of EV energy consumption. Actual savings vary based on driving style, vehicle weight, road conditions, and tyre age. For comparative purposes only. Lifetime savings based on a 40,000km / 25,000 mile tread life.

The Aplus was the cheapest tyre on test, but this time the Michelin wasn't the most expensive tyre of the group, it was the joint most expensive with Goodyear!

These are cool tests, but I don't see why sand, dirt, mud, grass tractions are relevant to SUVs on summer tyres. People who buys jeep and stick to road tyres have little to no intention to venture offroad. Or if they do, they are deluding themselves. Just my (unpopular) opinion.

I don't disagree, but also people who are doing research into an suv kind of expect it. Grass and gravel do have real world applications. Mud is the craziest one really, a summer tyre has zero mud ability and mud testing is REALLY difficult to get trends even with MT tyres.

A rare A.B. test with no Conti contender.

I hadn't even noticed that! I assume they were testing in the difficult period between PC6 rundown and PC7 ram up!
