Continental WinterContact TS 870 P vs Kleber Krisalp HP3

Continental's WinterContact TS 870 P and Kleber's Krisalp HP3 target different winter drivers: the TS 870 P is a UHP-leaning, balanced all-rounder, while the Krisalp HP3 is a touring tyre that prioritizes deep-winter security. Across eight shared professional tests from 2022-2025, the Continental consistently finishes higher overall, driven by strong dry and wet results, efficient rolling resistance, and solid wear performance. Kleber counters with class-leading snow and ice aptitude and often better straight-line aquaplaning, underscoring its snow-first philosophy.

Test Results

Independent comparison tyre tests are the best source of data to get tyre information from, and the good news is there have been eight tests which compare both tyres directly!

Summary of eight total tests comparing both tyres directly
TyreTest WinsPerformance

six wins
Kleber Krisalp HP3two
two wins

While it might look like the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is better than the Kleber Krisalp HP3 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Consistently superior wet and dry braking (e.g., −5-7% vs. Kleber in multiple tests)
  • Balanced handling with better precision and stability across surfaces
  • Lower rolling resistance and slightly better fuel efficiency
  • Generally stronger wear and abrasion results for longer life
  • Top-tier snow performance (shortest snow braking and stronger traction in most tests)
  • Confident snow/ice handling with large safety reserves
  • Good straight-line aquaplaning resistance
  • Lower purchase price and better value metrics

Dry Braking

Looking at data from five tyre tests, the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P was better during five dry braking tests. On average the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P stopped the vehicle in 4.56% less distance than the Kleber Krisalp HP3.

Continental WinterContact TS 870 P Driver Reviews

Most drivers rate the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P very highly, praising its outstanding wet grip and braking, strong snow traction, stable high-speed behavior, and quiet, comfortable ride. Many note predictable handling and good wear/longevity, with some EV owners highlighting low noise and rolling resistance. A minority mention softer steering feel and less sharp dry handling, and several point out a high price. One outlier reports poor snow/ice performance, which contrasts with the overwhelmingly positive winter feedback from others.

Kleber Krisalp HP3 Driver Reviews

Most drivers rate the Kleber Krisalp HP3 highly, praising its strong snow and wet performance, low noise/comfort for a winter tyre, and decent wear/value. Dry grip and handling precision are adequate for normal driving but can feel soft with noticeable understeer if pushed; several users report a 'jelly/boat-like' feel. A minority mention noise at certain speeds, vibration/manufacturing issues in specific batches, and weaker performance on ice or slush at higher speeds. Overall sentiment is positive with safety and winter capability as standout strengths.

Tire size: 225/55 R 17 101V, Car: Audi A6 C7 3.0 TFSI Quattro. I bought these tires after watching Tyrereviews winter tire test. After switching from old Michelin Alpin 4, the first thing I've noticed was... silence. The gap was huge. These tires are quieter than my summer tires- Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (245/45 R18 99Y). I've tested them in almost every weather conditions. They are great. The bigest disadvantage is maybe snow grip- good but not exceptional (new winter tires are better in mild climate), but they saved me 2-3 times during winter skidding :). Definitely worh to buy, especially... Continue reading this review using the link below

Best tires I've ever owned, for the money. Smooth like butter and quiet for a winter tire on potholes, road cracks or rough roads. Not quiet for a winter tire but really quiet. Grip is superb, both wet and dry. Feedback is numbed by the smoothness of the tire. Handling is very good.

Conclusion

The TS 870 P is the more rounded performer: repeatedly shorter in wet and dry braking, more precise and stable in handling, better curved aquaplaning resistance, lower rolling resistance, and generally longer-lasting. Its main trade-off is price-and in a few tests, merely adequate ice/snow braking compared with the best snow specialists. The Krisalp HP3 shines where winter is harshest: it repeatedly delivers the shortest snow stopping distances, stronger snow traction, excellent snow handling confidence, and very competitive pricing, but it sacrifices wet/dry stopping power and handling precision, and it can understeer sooner on damp surfaces.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking: Continental leads in every shared wet braking metric (up to ~7% shorter).
  • Dry braking/handling: Continental repeatedly stops shorter and handles faster on dry.
  • Snow capability: Kleber consistently wins snow braking, traction, and snow handling.
  • Aquaplaning: Kleber better in straight-line; Continental better in curved aquaplaning.
  • Efficiency: Continental shows lower rolling resistance and slightly lower fuel use.
  • Value and price: Kleber is noticeably cheaper and often rates better on value.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
