Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 vs Michelin Alpin 6

This head-to-head pitches two proven premium winter touring tyres against each other: Bridgestone's Blizzak LM005 and Michelin's Alpin 6. Across 24 shared professional tests, both have strong reputations, but they go about winter performance differently. The LM005 has built its name on class-leading wet grip and confident, intuitive handling; the Alpin 6 counters with excellent longevity and consistently solid performance across wintry surfaces.

Expect a clear split in priorities. The Bridgestone repeatedly delivers the shortest wet braking and sharpest wet handling, often by meaningful margins (for example, up to 14% shorter wet braking in 2022/23). The Michelin tends to brake better on ice, rides smoothly, and dominates wear and predicted mileage (often 30-70% longer tread life), making it a value leader over the life of the tyre despite a higher purchase price.

Test Results

Independent comparison tyre tests are the best source of data to get tyre information from, and the good news is there have been twenty-four tests which compare both tyres directly!

While it might look like the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 is better than the Michelin Alpin 6 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tyres are very complicated objects which means where one tyre is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tyres compare across multiple tyre test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Class-leading wet braking and wet handling across most tests
  • Very competitive snow braking with strong aquaplaning resistance
  • Lower purchase price and often lower rolling resistance
  • Confident, easy-to-control handling and low noise
  • Outstanding tread life and low wear (often 30-70% higher mileage)
  • Balanced winter performance with stronger ice braking
  • Smooth ride quality and precise, safe dry-road behavior
  • Good fuel efficiency in several ADAC tests due to low weight

Dry Braking

Looking at data from twelve tyre tests, the Michelin Alpin 6 was better during five dry braking tests. On average the Michelin Alpin 6 stopped the vehicle in 1.06% less distance than the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005.

Real World Driver Reviews

Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 Driver Reviews

Drivers of the Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 frequently praise its outstanding wet grip and braking, along with predictable, stable handling and good comfort when new. Many also find it capable in light-to-moderate snow. However, a significant number report rapid tread wear and a notable drop-off in snow/ice traction as the tyre ages, with some also noting rising noise levels over time. Overall sentiment is moderately positive, but durability and aged winter performance are recurring concerns.

Michelin Alpin 6 Driver Reviews

Drivers largely praise the Michelin Alpin 6 for excellent wet and dry cold grip, strong braking, high comfort, low noise, and outstanding longevity/wear. Snow performance is mixed: many report very good traction and control in snow, while a notable minority criticize snow/ice grip and especially snow braking as average or poor. Handling feel is generally stable, though a few note softness or vague steering at higher speeds. Overall sentiment is positive, with the Alpin 6 seen as a durable, refined winter tyre that excels in wet/dry but can be inconsistent on deep snow/ice.

This was my tyre of choice after seeing some reviews on snow. I must say it delivered in snow as promised on a hill and slopes it really was good to drive with predictable control. I had to stop on slope and I managed to resume with not too much slip on a RWD off course DSC was OFF and gentle throttle control once it moves you can have some fun on snow. In a dry comfortable tyre for long journeys a bit noisy over 160 km/h, also very stable at 210 km/h in dry. In wet it’s stable and very good under breaking. On twisty roads I was surprised how good it was for a winter tyre, ton of grip and... Continue reading this review using the link below

I've had until now kleber krisalp hp2, Avon Ice touring, Pirelli Cinturato. The Alpin 6 have a good grip on wet and dry, they are silent to. I'm waiting the snow to test it. 1st impresion, verry good.

Conclusion

Patterns across multiple tests are consistent: the Blizzak LM005 is the wet-road benchmark with strong aquaplaning resistance and reliable snow braking, while the Alpin 6 trades a little ultimate wet grip for excellent durability, balanced winter manners, and stronger ice braking. In mixed UK/Western European winters that are predominantly wet with occasional snow, the Bridgestone's grip advantage and typically lower price make it the performance pick. In regions where winters are longer and colder, or where buyers value fewer replacements and robust ice performance, the Michelin's longevity and balance pay off.

If you prioritise stopping distances in rain, crisp responses and low rolling resistance, choose the LM005. If you want the best overall wear, calmer behavior at the limit, and better ice braking, choose the Alpin 6. The practical takeaway: LM005 for peak wet safety and value up-front; Alpin 6 for total-cost value and endurance over multiple seasons.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking: LM005 consistently shorter (e.g., 14% in 2022/23; wins 15/15 summaries)
  • Wet handling: LM005 leads most tests; Michelin can understeer and push wide
  • Snow performance: Close overall-LM005 often wins snow braking; Alpin 6 edges some snow handling/traction
  • Ice braking: Alpin 6 stronger where measured (wins 2/2)
  • Wear/mileage: Alpin 6 clearly superior (e.g., 61,000 km vs 36,100 km in ADAC 2023)
  • Cost/value: LM005 cheaper to buy; Alpin 6 better total-life value due to longevity

Footnote

This page has been developed using tyre industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tyres in the same test.

Why is this important? Tyre testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tyre test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tyre tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tyre Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tyre comparison, Tyre Reviews doesn't.
