Michelin Pilot Sport EV

The Michelin Pilot Sport EV is the first Michelin tyre designed specifically for electric sports cars. The PSEV features technologies developed from the Michelin involvement in Formula E to help reduce energy usage, lower noise all while retaining a sporty handling and the ability to deal with the extra weight and torque of electric vehicles.

The PS EV is CO2 neutral at the point of sale and will be rolled out in the course of 2021 in a choice of 16 sizes (original equipment: 11 sizes / replacement market: 5 sizes) for 18- to 22-inch wheels.

Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tyre tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

As a tyre specifically designed for electric vehicles, the Michelin Pilot Sport EV likely offers some performance benefits tailored to the unique demands of EVs. Although not officially part of the test, the Pilot Sport EV was included in some of the assessments, allowing for a partial comparison with the other contenders.
Based on the available results, the Michelin Pilot Sport EV struggled in wet conditions, with relatively poor performances in wet braking, aquaplaning, and curved aquaplaning tests. The tyre's dry handling performance was moderate, placing 6th among the tested tyres.

Drivers report mixed results for the Michelin Pilot Sport EV. Many praise its dry grip, responsive handling, and notably strong longevity on heavy EVs, but a significant number criticize its wet grip and confidence, with some calling it unsafe in damp conditions. Noise and comfort receive split feedback, with several noting howling/road noise while others find it smooth and quiet. Overall sentiment skews slightly negative given frequent wet-performance complaints despite a few high-scoring positive experiences.

Given 56% while driving a BMW 218d Active Tourer (225/45 R20) on mostly town for 100 average miles
Like other reviewers mentioned, the tyres are disastrous in any wet conditions. Just went through a puddle and then my tyres would skid in straight line braking… unbelievable

I am a big fan of Michelin PSS tyres but this is just not up to par at all. Took delivery of my XPENG G6 OEM tyres for only 10 days and now I have to pay 15k to get a new set of tyres

The tyres are just unsafe stay away from them

Given 45% while driving a Tesla Model Y Long Range (225/40 R20) on mostly motorways for 20,000 spirited miles
I have these tires on my Tesla Y and till now, I have had 3 tires changed before their end date (first time at 25k km’s) the foam inside would come loose and create some sort of centrifuge effect which stopped me from driving faster then 100kmh, one time for 1500km’s as it started in the south of France and I had to go back to the Netherlands. I don’t trust these tires at all anymore.

Given 53% while driving a Chery Luxeed R7 (255/45 R21) on mostly town for 10,563 average miles
My car is a Luxeed R7, weighing 2.3 tons and with 17,000 kilometers on it. It's rear-wheel drive and has a horsepower of just over 300. At that power, it tends to slip in corners. Its grip is the worst of any Michelin tire I've ever used. My biggest complaint about this tire is its wet grip, which is extremely poor and lacks any confidence. Comfort and quietness are decent, though. But considering it costs only 2,000 RMB, while a Continental SC6 only costs 1,800 RMB and a Pirelli PZero E only 1,200 RMB, the Michelin PSEV offers a very poor value for money. I won't consider it again for my next tire change.

Given 86% while driving a Tesla Model Y Long Range (255/40 R20) on a combination of roads for 40,000 spirited miles
I've had these tyres on my car from new and they are now hitting 40,000 miles and still going strong. Excellent wear and longevity - still have another 5-6000 life in them but will be swapping out for Crossclimate 3 Sport this winter as driving to the Alps otherwise would have happily bought the same tyres again. Plenty of grip and responsive handling for daily driving and some spirited B roads. Never aquaplaned even in inches deep standing water. Does understeer very slightly if aggressive turn in on wet roads but quick to regain control. Main negative is the minimal comfort as the road imperfections are directly transmitted to the cabin (although that may well be the car's suspension design) and they are not very quiet unless on perfect tarmac.

Given 79% while driving a Cupra Born 58kw (235/40 R20) on a combination of roads for 30,000 average miles
There are mixed thoughts it seems with the Michelin Pilot Sport EV tyre.

These tyres were the OEM choice on my Cupra Born V3 58kw, and I am still on the original fronts at 30k miles albeit they now need changing due to the side tread disappearing.
I'm not a hooligan with a heavy right foot nor a "Miss Daisy" type of driver, but generally drive with a mixed variety of spirited and casual driving style.
I haven't experienced any moments of loss of grip or felt they aren't up to the job in either wet or dry conditions, but then I guess you adapt to the road conditions as and when some caution is needed, so never pushed them in unfavourable conditions to find out how far they can perform.

The road noise is not as quiet as I would expect considering they have an acoustic membrane inside when comparing with other standard tyres, but then I haven't tried a non EV rated tyre on the car to truly compare the difference.

The original rears lasted around 17k miles before changing, and were still inside the legal limit too, so probably could have got 20k out of them.

The range isn't great with these tyres, but then they have a larger footprint compared with the other Cupra OEM offerings with 18" and 19" wheels that have a much better range.

So, my experience with the Pilot Sport EV are fairly positive and would consider buying again.

Given 60% while driving a SEAT Cupra Born (235/40 R20) on a combination of roads for 10,000 average miles
Awful howling cavity noise at around 200hz on anything but the smoothest of roads. I've driven other lower profile tires which were a lot quieter than these. Otherwise an ok performance tire.

Given 100% while driving a Skoda (235/50 R20) on mostly country roads for 5,000 average miles
Had these tyres fitted to a Skoda Enyaq for 6 months now. 100% delighted with them. I've found them perfect in the wet and same in dry conditions. Much smoother ride than the factory bridgestones that the car came with. No obvious wear on the tyres yet so I think the compound of these tyres is much more suited to a heavy EV.

Michelin Pilot sport should stand for performance tyre, which is not the case for these PS EV.
Overall behave as a medium class tyre or even budget tyre.
Low grip in dry and unpredictable.
Not awful in wet , but also not at Pilot Sport standard.
For sure will not buy again.

Given 47% while driving a Hyundai Ioniq (255/45 R20) on a combination of roads for 14,000 average miles
Never had such a poor tyre. Skids over manhole covers and slides for no apparent reason on mildly damp roads even at low speeds. Provides no confidence when driving and potentially extremely dangerous. Would expect a budget tyre to perform better. Michelin should be embarrassed to have this tyre in their range.

Given 86% while driving a Tesla Model Y Perf (255/40 R21) on mostly country roads for 10,500 spirited miles
I have a staggered setup with 255/40R21 in the front and 275/40R21 on the rears I love these tires. They are quite grippy and I find them good not excellent but good in the wet. Yes there are better rain tires but the are not as good in the dry. It's always a compromise. In the winter I'm driving on CrossClimate 2 SUV in 275/40R20 all around and they are better in the rain but much worse in the dry...all about the season and the compromises.

Given 53% while driving a Hyundai Ioniq (255/45 R20) on a combination of roads for 7,500 easy going miles
As good it is on dry roads, as disastrous it is in the wet. Comfort and noise are exemplary - the best I have experienced. Road feedback is smooth and pleasant. Full power start is no issue with 605 Nm of torque - there is no slip at all. But this tyre gets very dangerous even after a few drops of rain - the stopping distance is ridiculous, the car feels like driving on ice... Even on dry, the first touch of the brakes, if it's more rapid upsets the tyres and makes them slip a bit (all four by the way). I don't even get it how Michelin released such a (premium) product?! It even has a B rating for wet braking. The wear is not as good as I hoped, too (but this might be because of the high weight). I got it factory fitted but will never buy it again for sure Stay away from this model if you don't live in Cyprus or OAE... Shame on you, Michelin!

Handle fine in dry conditions, but once it’s a bit wet or there’s gravel on the road, it’s like ice skating
