Best Tyres for the Matra Djet

I have used these tyres on a few vehicles. For present purposes, my focus is on my Djet (a light-weight mid-engined coupe of the 60s) & on the size 165/70-14. I consider them to be very good tyres & am bewildered by some of the reviews. I drive the Djet very briskly indeed on country roads &, given its "tossable" charms, much of its time is spent at an angle to its direction of travel. I judge it to have good levels of grip in the dry & very good levels of grip in the wet (longitudinally under braking & laterally). But these qualities are not its main charms. It is not the crispest responding structure available in most sizes (but possibly is in 165/70) but is notable for two related traits.
One is that it's a very "talkative" tyre which lets you know precisely what it is doing (especially useful in the wet). The second is that when its (high) adhesion levels are exceeded, its limit behaviour is benign - the transient zone is broad & response to remedial inputs is faithful (especially important in the wet).
I'd love to be able to fit Michelin PilotSports 4 or Conti SportContact 6 tyres but, regrettably, 165/70-14 is not an available size. Nor is the PremiumContact 5 available in Australia in 165/ 70-14 (or I'd fit them). In the meantime, I'm very happy with the PC2.
Not that I care, but they are not harsh riding or noisy although they are short-lived.

These were fitted to my Djet by a previous owner. My priorities are: wet braking, wet lateral grip (slick roads, not deep puddles) & progressive & talkative behaviour on the limit. I have no interest in comfort or longevity & prefer to have a short life, wet road friendly, soft compound tyre. Wet braking was ok but I considered them appallingly poor on most of my priorities. Instant plough understeer that was difficult to tune out with tyre pressures (I ended up with 39 psi fronts & 31 psi rears on a mid-engined vehicle!) & general unresponsiveness to inputs (initial & corrective) & low wet grip levels were notable. Shifting to my current Continental PremiumContact2s transformed the car's behaviour on each of my priorities.
The 155/80-15 size is an awkward one for anything decent in tyres & were I to be motivated to return to 15" wheels, then the FF soft compound version of Michelin's Xas seems likely to be a better proposition (I found the regular Xas rather good in the wet & very taut in structure when used on past vehicles).
So: I don't recommend the Vredestein unless pootling about on dry roads is all you'll do.

I've used these on two vehicles - my Djet and on the front of my modified Renault 4CV. My priorities are: wet braking, wet lateral grip (slick roads, not deep puddles) & progressive & talkative behaviour at the limit. I have no interest in how comfortable they are or how long they last & am quite willing to trade off wear against soft compound wet grip. On the 4CV, these replaced the excellent EcoContact3s which preceded then. (Similar behaviour profile except that their structure is tauter than the EC3.) I find them to be a nicely responsive (I run pressures in the mid thirties) & communicative tyre with excellent wet grip (braking & cornering) & benign limit behaviour (glorious 4 wheel drifts in the Djet in the wet). Regrettably, this size is now withdrawn in Australia otherwise I'd be a repeat customer. Recommended.
