2015 Auto Express Tyre Test - 10th of 11 tyres

  • Overall - The Champiro HPY felt most at home on the dry handling, thanks to a sharp turn in and quick direction change. Sadly, that was the peak of the grip, with the dry struggling in dry and wet braking, and wet handling and aquaplaning tests. Fourth best rolling resistance, but still over 20% behind the Dunlop.

2013 Auto Express Summer Tyre Test - 10th of 10 tyres

  • Overall - The Chinese GT Radial is the cheapest tyre on test, saving you around £100 over a premium rival. As usual, the savings come at an expense - wet handling, though at around 10% off the best tyre on test this is closer than budget tyres have been in the past. In the dry the GT Radial was a little better, just a second off on the dry handling circuit with a sharp, sporty turn in, but still needed nearly three meters further to stop the car under dry braking.

    Given 53% while driving a Proton Exora Premium CFE (205/55 R16) on mostly motorways for 26,560 average miles
    This tyre came as stock with my 1.5-tonne mid-sized front-wheel-drive MPV.
    It is a great tyre for general purposes. It is quiet (compared to Continental CC6), and has good handling performance in both dry and wet, but braking distance in wet could be challenging. However, even with wheel rotation (swapped front-back), the lifespan of this tyre is short and it got worn out at 26.5k miles (42.5k km) with steel belts exposed.
    Conclusion: The GT Radial Champiro HPY is a good tyre with a balance of comfort and performance for conservative to moderate driving style, but definitely not designed tough enough for aggressive driving.

    Given 76% while driving a Audi S6 (265/35 R19) on a combination of roads for 1,600 spirited miles
    Got these free when i purchased an S6 5.2V10 2011 back in February 2023.

    Since they were "A0/Audi Approved" thought I'd give them a go till replacing them with the usual Dunlop SP Sport Maxx.

    After about 1,500km they've bedded in nicely, but seem to wear quicker than equivalent Dunlops, Michelin or Pirellis (same as when i tried them on my B8 Audi S4 Avant 3.0T; those needed changing after just 6,500 spirited km).

    Wet handling is inferior to Pilot Sport or SportMaxx, and braking distances are longer (they rumble under breaking, too), but dry handling is exemplary though road noise, vibration is pronounced.

    For a cheap tyre they're perfectly serviceable (or for a track day) but you get what you pay for.

    Good tyres quiet and good grip wearing ok too just as good as the conti tyres I had on car before for a fraction of the price actually half the price!

    Given 71% while driving a Mazda 3 MPS (235/40 R18 W) on a combination of roads for 20,000 spirited miles
    Was surprised at the level of grip these GT Radials offered, grippy in the dry and was vert good with spirited driving. Even in the wet I experienced very little aquaplaning despite hitting some slight puddles on the highway.
    It was still giving good feedback in the wet when slightly new, and decent levels of feedback towards the end of its life.
    Highly recommended as a reasonable budget mid range performance tyre, if it held up well on a FWD 380Nm torque car like the Mazda 3 MPS, it can definitely be a good set for most performance JDM turbo sports sedans/coupes.hatchbacks.
    Just be sure to rotate them accordingly.

    Awfyl tyre! Would never buy again!

    Extremely high road noise. Good grip in dry an wet, but you need to hold hard on to the steering wheel. The car wonders in every direction. As a result, had to change 1 wheel bearing and 2 tie rods. As if the steel belt inside the tyres are loose or something. I'm sire this is a production error, these tyres can not be this bad! Sadly, i never went to complain.

    So after 10k miles the tires are completely shot. In all aspects GT radial are very bad for normal driving and normal cars. But they deliver a good XL tire for my trailer at least.

    Have done twenty thousand Kays.Have had them rotated every 8 000 kays .

    Love them to bits however concerned about how many kays ill get ..

    Not hard on tyres and check pressure every month ..36 F. 32 r

    After having Continental ContiSport Contact 5s, my garage recommended these as a cheaper option (was slightly skint at the time). I was slightly reserved to begin with as I hadn't really heard of GT Radial before. BUT, I can't really fault them at all! A good all round tyre and I was pleasantly surprised at their performance in the wet. I have just bought 2 more and now have a complete set of 4 and unless I win the lottery any time soon, I will be sticking with them from now on... Faultless for the price!

    I have an Audi A7 which came with Goodyear OE tyres & didn't want to pay the price of a full set of replacement GYs so opted for the GT Radial HPYs after recommendation from Micheldever tyres in Hampshire.
    The tyres lasted just as long as the GYs 18,000 miles with 3-4mm left & cost me approx. 70% of the price. Grip & comfort just as good!

    FOR MY BMW 320D 184 BHP ON FRONT WHEELS SIZE 225/40/18 EXCELLENT 4 MONEY PAID.
    NO NOISE, CORNERING GOOD, WEAR OK, ESPECIALLY AFTER RUN FLATS :)

    Given 93% while driving a Jaguar XJR (255/40 R19 W) on a combination of roads for 40,000 average miles
    These tyres carry a budget price but not a budget quality. I am on my second set now having forked out a fortune previously to keep to the original Pirellis. The Champiros are lasting 15 to 20 thousand miles where the Pirellis only managed 9 to 10 thousand, There is no loss in high speed performance or feel and these are quieter on the road. Superb tyres.

    Fitted these rubber and already scrubbing 15K mileage. Good traction during dry. Good grip during wet. Definitely will buy again.

    Given 74% while driving a Peugeot 5008 (215/50 R17 W) on a combination of roads for 32,000 average miles
    theses tyres are now on their last legs after 32k miles, I'm not a boy racer (Peugeot 5008 MPV) or an old slow coach, but these tyres have been fantastic from start to finish, never had any issues with aquaplaning or loss of grip when pushing it to its limit.

    Replaced Potenzas with these because of cost. Pleasantly surprised; better dry grip, better wet grip, quieter. All round a better tyre at half the price. Not able to comment on wear yet

    The wet and dry grip are as per ratings..too early to judge the wear..it should be the same as nexen 8000..the amount of comfortness is none of my expectation..the only problem with this tyre is that i had to claimed 3 newly bought tyres cuz it was uneven when it was made..the car shaken pretty bad at 100kmh and above..after changing it and heaps amount of balancing work done, the car is okay now although i can still feel the shaking but not as much as before..buy again? Pretty much a subjective decision..i would if the tyres are well made from the factory..
