Pirelli has launched the fifth generation of its iconic P Zero tyre, replacing the PZ4 version. Unveiled on March 31, 2025, the new P Zero builds on 40 years of technological innovation since the original model established the Ultra-High Performance (UHP) tyre market in 1985.
The Pirelli P Zero PZ5 has been available to purchase in the market for a number of months already, and Tyre Reviews will be publishing the world's first test of it next week, but for now here's the information from the press release.
Development and Technology
The new P Zero was developed using cutting-edge technology, with Pirelli's research and development engineers leveraging artificial intelligence systems and proprietary algorithms to achieve deeper insights into tyre performance dynamics. Virtual prototype testing played a key role in the development process, helping to reduce development time and optimize resources.
Performance Improvements
Tests highlight two primary strengths of the new tyre: improved handling and shorter braking distances. The enhanced handling performance was confirmed in track tests on both dry and wet surfaces. From launch, all versions of the new tyre have earned an "A" rating on the European wet grip label, with the 10 replacement sizes available at launch receiving this top classification.
The development focused on tyre structure and tread design, with optimized grooves and contact patch to enhance cornering grip. The more balanced contact patch improves both braking performance and wear rate, helping to maintain consistent performance throughout the tyre's life cycle. Visually, the new P Zero also features updated sidewall graphics with contrasting markings.
Size Range and Vehicle Applications
Available in sizes from 18 to 23 inches, the new range already includes over 50 products. Most of the lineup features Pirelli's specialized technologies, including Elect - a package designed for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that increases range by up to 10% through reduced rolling resistance while handling high torque and reducing noise.
Pirelli's engineers have already developed specific versions homologated for upcoming premium vehicles, including the Lamborghini Urus SE, Audi A5, BMW M5 and M5 Touring, Mercedes GLE and GLS, Lucid Gravity, Polestar 4, Nio ET9, and Xiaomi SU7.
The P Zero Family
The P Zero family has served as a development laboratory for Pirelli technologies, with innovations like Elect (2019) and P Zero E (2023) emerging from P Zero research. The P Zero E was the world's first UHP tyre with over 55% of materials from natural or recycled sources and a triple 'A' rating on the European label.
Beyond the standard P Zero, the family includes specialized variants such as the P Zero E for electric vehicles, P Zero R for high-performance cars and SUVs, P Zero Trofeo RS for track driving (also homologated for road use), and P Zero Winter 2 for cold-weather conditions.
Heritage and Manufacturer Partnerships
Pirelli's close partnerships with premium and prestige automakers have resulted in over 3,000 bespoke versions of the P Zero created over the past four decades, equipping iconic vehicles from Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Pagani, Aston Martin, Porsche, and other premium brands. These collaborations have helped Pirelli secure its position as the supplier for more than 50% of high and ultra-high-end vehicles across global markets.
