2024 Auto Bild SUV Winter Tyre Test
9th/13
245/45 R18 • 2024
Well-balanced good winter performance, good grip and sporty handling in wet conditions, low road noise, good rolling comfort.
Limited safety reserves for aquaplaning, slightly longer braking distances.
Satisfactory.

Questions and Answers for the Pirelli P Zero Winter
Ask a question

Very interesting that there is not a single tire test for the tire? Why is that?
At a guess it's because Pirelli would prefer the Cinturato Winter tyres tested, as these are likely to do better in the European tests which emphasise snow performance. The P Zero Winter will likely have less snow performance in order to handle well in the dry and wet (for a winter tyre)

The only test I could find with this tire was an SUV tire test. As far as I know, the tire is more designed for high-horsepower hot hatches or coupes, as the owner of the Subaru WRX Turbo already pointed out. Why was Pirelli so stupid as to agree to this tire for the only official test?
I'm not sure i understand the question. The P Zero Winter 2 is now avilable and has been tested twice already.

I drive a 992 Carrera 4S in the Pacific Northwest. I'm using the Porsche OEM version of this tire (N-rated). In the snow I've had no problems with grip, under normal fairly cautious driving. But that is where the benefits of this tire end for me. In the dry or damp, the handling feels unpredictable in bends in a way I've never had before, like the grip limits are far lower but it's hard to sense at what speed or how it will behave. In the wet, these are abysmal. I've had ABS kick in under just slightly harder-than-usual braking. On a slightly damp surface (a couple hours after rain), a friend with the same car but on summer tires (in 37F / 3 C weather!) did a hard 0-60 at a highway entrance without issue - I was behind him and tried the same, but got wheel spin and wheel hop as the AWD scrabbled for traction. I'll also add that the rubber on the sidewalls appears to be breaking down, the tires are 2.5 years old and have always lived indoors.
If your winter is mostly snowy, these are not bad, but if you get mild rainy winters with minimal snow, like the PNW, I'd avoid these.

Superior noise control than Sottozero 3 and Michelin X-ice. Amazing comfort, in comparison among whatever runflats or non-runflats. Very good winter tires for limos.
Performance is a bit of disappointing. There’s no magic for winter tires putting down all 590 lb-ft torque on snowy days, even M760i is all-wheel drive, which they are supposed to be. Lateral grip on dry road is pretty good, bringing the confidence and feeling when cornering with summer tires back to winter days. Ice grip is poor while the grip on packed snow is even worse. Wet grip is not quite decent either.
Would definitely repurchase for the comfort a limo just need. But in scope of performance, think twice on the trade-off: snow/ice grip, which are the definitive advantage of winter tires over summer tires, for summer tire-class (P0 PZ4 runflat? Definitely not Michelin PS 4 S class) lateral grip on dry roads.
Conclusion:
Pros: Awesome comfort and noise control; good lateral grip and responsiveness
Cons: Poor ice grip and snow grip.

This is essentially pirellis flagship sports car winter. If you buy it you should know this ahead of time. I saw reviews of people putting these on suvs etc and complaining about performance.. they definitely would not shine on a larger heavier vehicle. this is the BEST winter you can buy for the application. I have a set of these on my 2022 wrx and they are incredible. They put the power down like nobodys business. Only downside I've noticed is deep snow cornering. Although this is a pretty obvious trade off given the tread pattern. You cannot have good dry performance without the external shoulder blocks this tire has but they also sacrifice deep snow cornerability so know this before you buy. All in all these are an incredible tire and get my car through snow as deep as the ground clearance. But What more could you ask for in a winter

I picked these up on sale for 30% less than comparable Michelin or Conti in 2020 and drove them throughout the New England winter on wet, slushy, snowy, potholes, ice, and at times dry roads. I have driven numerous country/ dirt roads with snow up to the door sills with no issue. If you want to have some fun on a quiet road after a snowfall, these will allow you to do so with control. These are not UHP summer tires and that difference is noticeable in dry conditions, but otherwise, they have mated nicely to my VW Golf R.
These do not feel as "chunky" or grippy as a studless winter tire or other touring winter tires, which we've installed on our Audi Allroad. While those studless/ non-performance winter tires may offer "better" grip on ice, I have never come across an issue where these Perelli's were inadequate. On the flip side, I have felt that driving a Blizzak or similar tires is overly unresponsive and mushy when in dry/ mild conditions, where these continue to provide support and fun.
Overall road noise is less than the summer PS4's I have, which is nice, but is also likely attributed to the higher profile tire for these. I recently re-installed these in preparation for winter, and tread wear appears to be about average. Like with all tires road surface, tire pressure, and ambient temperatures will have a big effect on longevity. In summary, I would recommend these for any car driving in winter, especially for a spirited car/ driver, and for the right price.
