Methodology & Configuration
Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tyre tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

The Pirelli P Zero Winter 2 claims third place with particularly impressive wet weather capabilities and a sustainability focus, being manufactured from at least 55% recycled or bio-based materials. On snow, it delivers good performance with strong braking and traction, though handling reveals an uncharacteristically clear understeer tendency for Pirelli, scoring 21/30 for driving safety. Where this tyre truly shines is on wet surfaces, achieving the absolute shortest braking distance at 48.6 meters with near-exemplary grip and handling that earns a perfect 45/45 safety score - no other winter tyre in this test stops as safely in the wet. Its only weakness appears in lateral aquaplaning resistance. In dry conditions, the Pirelli maintains its flawless performance with balanced characteristics between longevity, comfort (8/10), efficiency, safety (26/30) and driving enjoyment. The tyre's well-rounded nature and environmental credentials make it a strong choice for those seeking both performance and sustainability, though buyers should be aware of its slightly reduced aquaplaning protection in curves.
The Pirelli P Zero Winter 2 emerges as the test's best Central European friction tyre, though it follows the expected pattern for this category with poor ice grip but excellent bare pavement performance. On snow, it surprisingly achieves full points, but the ice performance is nowhere near adequate, leaving drivers vulnerable in truly slippery conditions. Where this tyre excels is on bare pavement - wet and dry - where it makes the test vehicle behave almost like it's fitted with summer tyres. Grip level from the Pirelli, combined with fine handling characteristics, makes the test car easy to drive even in difficult situations. The stability and precision on asphalt are outstanding, while aquaplaning resistance is excellent. However, fuel efficiency is mediocre compared to the best in class. This tyre represents the classic Central European compromise: superb for wet and slushy roads plus dry asphalt, but genuinely inadequate when real winter grip is needed.
The Pirelli P Zero Winter 2 excelled in snow performance, winning all snow tests and offering excellent wet and dry handling.
It had a slightly higher rolling resistance compared to the Michelin, finishing behind by 1.8%, which is a minor drawback.
The Pirelli P Zero Winter 2 emerged as a top performer, tying for first place with the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5. It excelled in snow performance, winning all snow tests, and showed strong results in wet and dry handling. The tyre offered excellent grip and predictability across various conditions. Its only minor drawback was a slightly higher rolling resistance compared to some competitors. Overall, the Pirelli P Zero Winter 2 proves to be an excellent choice for drivers seeking top-tier performance in winter conditions.

Questions and Answers for the Pirelli P Zero Winter 2

Ask a question
October 28, 2024

Hi. How about the expected durability of this tyre in comparison to key competitors like MICHELIN Alpin? Pirelli used to have some issues in this aspect with sottozero 2 and 3. With relatively low mileages, age and tyre wear they tended to lost its performance comparing to new tyre. Any ideas so far?

Without seeing a wear test it is impossible to know. You are correct that traditionally Michelin have always had a lead here, which is why they can charge more than most. Pirelli and the other competitors are getting closer all the time though!

Great in proper winter conditions, average otherwise.

Given 88% while driving a Cupra Formentor 4Drive 310hp (245/40 R19) on a combination of roads for 10,000 spirited miles
These tires are absolutely phenomenal on snow and ice (perfect grip), the direction changes are immediate and you can really feel a very strong grip on wet and cold roads as well. I couldn’t imagine that a winter tire could be so sporty and so enjoyable to drive (not noisy). The only trade is that they will last only 2 winters if you like to have fun but that’s the price you pay for an absolutely great driving experience ! I really recommend the Pirelli P zero winter 2 !

Apsolute monster of a tyre, wet, dry or snow!!! I bought NA2 version (Porsche homologation) for my Alfa Romeo 159 and handling is ridicolous, as well as grip, dry or wet. Fully recommend!

Given 99% while driving a Ford Focus ST (235/40 R18) on for 4,000 miles
First of all I would like to mention that I have switched cars and tyres too. I went from an Audi A4 B8.5 Quattro on Continental Wintercontact 870Ps to a Ford Focus ST mk4 and I was a bit worried going from awd to fwd during the winter, but Pirelli have made a great tyre. Dry, wet and snow grip are excellent, the only circumstance where I have found the tyres to not overachieve my expectations are conditions when the roads are soaking wet and the ambient temperatures are above 3 degrees Celsius and that is only in longitudinal grip when accelerating. Braking is amazing, lateral grip is astonishing for a winter tire and ice and performance is very good and wear seems also good. I would definitely recommend this tyre to anyone.
