Low Rolling Resistance Tyres to become compulsory
"As part of the European Union's commitment to improving road safety, Low Rolling Resistance Tyres (LRRT) are to become obligatory from 2012. The fuel saving potential of using such rubber is 3%, the lower level of fuel consumption resulting from the reduction in the resistance to motion when a tyre rolls." People who fit LRR tyres don't generally drive fast enough to 'slide into a ditch', and if it changes peoples driving habits by making them drive slower and use less fuel (consequently leaving more fuel for everyone else to use) then that's gotta be a good thing.
