Latest Tyre Test Results

2022 ViBilagare Nordic SUV Winter Tyre Test - 2nd of 8 tyres

  • Positive - Best nordic friction tires on asphalt. Low road noise.
  • Negative - Slightly lower cornering grip on snow/ice.
  • Overall - UltraGrip Ice 2 is the best choice for those who drive mostly on asphalt ground in milder winter conditions. It is superior on wet asphalt, that is otherwise a problem for Nordic friction tires. Goodyear handles aquaplaning well and also has good cornering grip and shortest braking distance on wet roads. You will also find the best stability and steering response on dry roads. In addition, the interior noise level is the lowest.
Despite the good asphalt properties, Goodyear performs well in the winter rounds. The braking distances are right up there with the best. The disadvantage is slightly worse cornering grip on snow and ice, where the grip disappears relatively suddenly and without warning.
In terms of points, it will be second overall, but Goodyear is the clear winner in wetter climates.

Questions and Answers for the Goodyear UltraGrip Ice 2

2021-09-13 - Is there any info available on when the Ultragrip Ice 3 will be available? It seems that it is in development. The Ice 2 seems to be falling behind in tests compared to newer models from Nokian/Michelin/Bridgestone.

I've not yet heard any information about the UltraGrip Ice 3, and it's still the Ice 2 in tests this year.

Given 89% while driving a Citroën C5 Tourer (225/60 R16) on mostly country roads for 13,000 average miles
I've driven about 20000km / 13000miles during last 6 months here in central finland with these tyres, and have nothing to complain about them. Wet ice is of course the worst condition to them, but yet totally manageable. On snow surfaces they have very good grip, and on tarmac, wet or dry, the best studless nordic winter tyres I've ever driven. Comfort level is about at same level as Michelin X-Ice Snow or other top level studless tyres. Tyre wear seems to be ok, they will last easily second winter (+20000km) or more. No surprices in any conditions, very good tyre for nordic winter.

Given 88% while driving a Skoda (215/55 R17) on a combination of roads for 6,000 average miles
Great winter tire. Second winter. Have all conditions to handle- dry, wet, snow, ice. Great performance during all conditions except maybe the ice. Very comfortable and quiet. Surprisingly good handling given it is nordic type (soft compound) of the winter tires. Overall very satisfied. Would deffinately buy it again.

    Comfortable tyre.

Grip on dry and wet is good for a winter tyre.

Grip on ice and snow is lower than other premium winter tyres I've had.

    Not going to buy again.

Used with a KIA Cee'd SW 2018, amazing winter tires for the Swedish winter, also drove them through Poland in the middle of winter. Great grip in winter conditions and extremely comfortable and quiet. Massive recommendation.

Given 84% while driving a Ford (215/55 R17) on a combination of roads for 300 average miles
For a front wheel drive car the tyres are very grippy and gives a safe feel to drive. they can be a bit slippery on steep up hills and when there is loose snow or Ice. But once the TC is off they do grip quite well and pull the car along very well.

I would recommend buying these tyres and i have had similar ones on a old 318i and they were perfect as well.

So, after summer tires you feel that the car on those tires is not so informative. In general handling in dry and wet conditions is confident. On small ice it's ok but on polished ice, you will lose control, but it's obvious as tires have no spikes. From my perspective, they are not as quiet as I would like to. One of the cons is that I think it has a weak side as for the XL model. After hitting a pothole (approx at 40kph(25mph), it was a painful pothole but definitely not the biggest one) I received 2 holes in 1 tire. From my side, I think it's a decent tire and I'm glad that I bought them.

    Volkswagen Passat B8 2.0 TDI 240hp 4Motion (225/45 R18) on a combination of roads for 27,962 spirited miles
The dry and wet grip is pretty average compare to my summer tire (245 40 19 PZ4) but certainly way better than my studded tires. It works pretty well on ice and stuff but on heavy snow, it might aquaplane a little bit? I usually get a bit of wheel spin when I accelerate hard but other than that it works ok. The wet brake is not very ideal tho. I found this tire pretty quiet. I think it's rated at 67 dB or something which is very good. I drove around 45000km on it and still get 5mm of thread left. In conclusion even tho it's not the best one in the market, it works quite well as a winter tire. I will purchase again just for the quietness.
