Falken Azenis RS820

Falken has introduced the AZENIS RS820, a new ultra-ultra-high-performance (UUHP) tyre for road and track use. The tyre is designed for high-performance vehicles, including sports cars and SUVs. It will be available in 38 sizes, with a speed index of up to 300 km/h. The design features an asymmetric tread pattern, four circumferential tread grooves, and hybrid-configured reinforcements using Aramid. Falken utilized its advanced 4D NANO technology to enhance the tyre's lifespan. Production for 30 of the sizes is set for 2023, with the remaining eight to be produced in 2024.

Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tyre tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

The Falken Azenis RS820 is Falken's new contender that feels good but whose performance remains a little way behind the bigger brands. On the wet handling circuit it wasn't far off the pace and felt genuinely good. Positive, clean turn-in allowed early throttle to load the rear and punch onto straights with full traction, and it was easy to find and tread the limit in the quick inner sweeps. Generally there was good composure and adjustability, making it biddable and fun. In the dry its steering was encouraging, with a keen, connected feel. Around the handling circuit it was smooth and quiet but struggled to make late clipping points convincingly. There was some heaviness and delay through transitions, though it delivered solid traction out of hairpins and felt strong on the brakes. It wasn't the most refined on the road, with a bassy rumble over coarse surfaces and a sharp response to ridges. While it lacked the sharpness and bite of the best in the dry, it had keen steering feel and was good to drive, especially in the wet.
The Falken Azenis RS820 delivers convincing curve stability and secure driving characteristics with short braking distances on dry roads. Testers appreciated its harmonious handling with smooth transitions when pushing the limits. On wet surfaces, Falken reacted somewhat more aggressively to load changes compared to the top performers. The tyre showed particularly strong performance on dry surfaces with impressive cornering stability, though it struggled slightly with aquaplaning issues, where it ranked last in the curved aquaplaning test. Slightly louder rolling noise was also noted as a minor drawback.
3rd/4
The most budget-friendly option in the test, but the Falken Azenis RS820 struggled to meet the high demands of the powerful BMW M4. While it performed adequately on regular roads, it showed instability at higher speeds and quickly reached its limits on the racetrack. The tyre's front-to-rear grip balance wasn't well matched, making it difficult to maintain the desired line through corners. It also demonstrated weak wet grip and poor aquaplaning resistance combined with higher rolling resistance and more noticeable road noise.

Given 100% while driving a Mercedes Benz SL350 (285/30 R19) on mostly country roads for 300 average miles
Usually run FK520 tyres where possible on my cars, but a recent purchase led me to try the RS820 due to the size. The tyres are great in wet and dry conditions and i thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a high mid range tyre.

Given 81% while driving a Nissan 370Z (275/35 R19) on a combination of roads for 300 spirited miles
After a long process of deliberating which tyres to fit on my 370z, I decided to give the new RS820s a try.

And up to now I have to say I’m really very happy with them. They replaced a set of Michelin Pilot 4Ss, which again, as we all know they’re a great tyre.

The Falken RS820 is a little quieter at motorway speed, useful in a car that’s known for being quite noisy.

They are more temperature sensitive than the Michelins were and will definitely wear quicker but the Falkens definitely feel better under braking where in the dry, from 70mph the 370z could use almost 100% of it’s total braking capability before any ABS intervention.

In the wet, that was still around 3/4 which is impressive nonetheless.

When the limits of grip are breached, the breakaway is predictable and “friendly” with the added bonus of giving the car a slightly more pointy front end compared to the Michelins.

I do think the Michelins are a better all round tyre for day to day use, but the Falkens come out on top in terms of sheer performance and added driver engagement.

Will definitely fit again.

Given 79% while driving a Mazda RX8 (235/40 R19) on for 12,000 miles
Great tires for Mazda RX-8. Very predictable, with good grip both on dry and wet. They work great both for dynamic driving on mountain roads and occasional track days.

Given 91% while driving a BMW m2 (275/35 R19) on track for 300 spirited miles
Very good and predictable tire on wet.similar traction to michelin ps4s. Dry handling is great for street tire, but after 7-8 hard laps on 3.2km track they start to feel soft and degrade slowly. Very good tire for beginners because it is not snappy and traction does not lose instantly on limit.
