Finishing position in each test
2026 AutoView Sport Tyre Test P2 of 7
The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 finished second and remains the reference this class is measured against. It is the most rounded tyre in the test, strong in the wet, close to the best in the dry and comfortable with it. What holds it back is the combination of the highest price, the worst rolling resistance of the seven, and the shoulder damage found on this particular set, which the testers were careful not to generalise from a single sample.

Hi, I’ve got a question about the suitability of Michelin Pilot Sport 5* for use on a BMW M340i xdrive. Show more Hi, I’ve got a question about the suitability of Michelin Pilot Sport 5* for use on a BMW M340i xdrive. I’ve seen your videos where you describe the the differences in tread materials between the 4S and 4S*. Assume the same applies to the 5*. My concern, however, is in the overall stiffness, particularly the sidewalls given that the M340i was delivered with and designed for runflats. Do you have a view on whether or not the 5* would be suitable, better or perhaps incompatible with the suspension. Show less
Either way it's probably fine but you never know until you fit.

Unfortunately, the offside rear wheel was damaged and had to be replaced over the summer, and was fitted with a Pilot Sport 5 as the PS4 was no longer available. As the nearside PS4 had very little wear and the PS5 has much the same tread pattern, I was advised it wasn’t necessary to ‘match’ it with a replacement. Is this accurate? Show less

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Owner Reviews
Review this tyreWhat owners say summarised from 121 reviews
Owners rate the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 very highly overall, with most highlighting standout grip in both the dry and wet and plenty of confidence for fast road driving. Comfort and refinement are also frequently praised for a UHP tyre, with many finding it quiet and easy-going day to day. Wear is more divisive: many report strong mileage, but around one in ten complain of quicker wear than expected (and a smaller group mention uneven wear). Around one in eight owners also wish for sharper, more precise steering feel compared with sportier rivals.

I have driven on PS5 for the first season in my 150HP car (Cupra Leon ST).
The grip both in dry and in the wet is excellent - I tried to push them to the limit many times and have never been able to lose the grip so far.
Although I have to mention that they feel very soft close at the limit - even though the grip always delivers in the end, the tyre often „floats” when turning that you may start wondering if the tyre will make it out of the corner.
Due to their softness, I find them comfortable as for the summer tyre on small bumps.
Summing up - the grip is excellent, very safe and stable, breaking is sharp and… the tyre itself looks amazing.
Something worth mentioning is that the rim protector doesn’t exist in this tyre - if that’s something you care about, the PS5 is not for you.
Although I can’t find any cons in terms of safety in PS5, as a tyre geek, I think about replacing them for the next season for something with more sharp/sporty steering (I would appreciate any recommendations).

Far better than factory fitted Bridgesones, the PS5 is an extremely capable tyre which has been very good in all conditions and even compared well to Nankang budget track rubber for grip at various circuits the Michelins only showing their road use bias when becoming hot and splippery.

Daily/spirited/track driving.
Good dry/wet grip, however they end up overheating, losing some grip and getting damaged. The treads of the tire loses its integrity.

Good grip - really deal well with the car - although they do wear out pretty fast - always been an issue on that car, especially if wheel alignments missed.

These were a big improvement over the Pilot Sport 4 I had on previously, I got about 3000 miles more out of them - though they still wore very quickly, that's high performance tyres for you. As with those the grip levels were insane. NVH definitely increased as the tyres wore down.
Most of my driving is town and country, with some highway - quite a bit of spirited driving on winding country backroads. New Zealand is pretty wet too, so a lot of wet driving. I never had these tyres in the snow as it doesn't snow this far north, but did drive them on icy roads and grip was poor, but very predictable.
After they wore out I decided to switch to an all season tyre and fitted a set of BF Goodrich Advantage Control - and that is when I noticed how harsh and crashy the PS5 was in comparison. The new tyres suit the Lexus better as a comfortable cruiser, even if they don't offer anywhere near the performance.
I think I'd buy these again for a different, sportier car though. They are fantastic for spirited driving.

Initial Impressions82% 1,000 milesAmazingly the PS5 manages to noticeably improve over the PS4, particularly in wet handling and wet braking. Supposedly will last longer too - I got 24,000km out of the PS4's I had previously, which for me was pretty good as other UHP tyres I've bought haven't made it to 20,000km - if the marketing for the PS5 is for real, that means in theory I could get as much as 30,000km out of them. Not sure how Michelin manage to do it!
- Hyundai I30N
- 235/35 R19

On my I30N I went from ContiContactSport7 to Michelin Pilot Sport 5. I found the MPS 5 grip to be about the same in the dry and slightly better in the wet , however I really have noticed that Michelin is more datty and more vague than the Conti's, I find that I am not as sure at the limit how the Michelins will respond.
In terms of comfort the Michelins are a bit better but Contis but the gap is not massive, rolling resistance seems about the same on the highway I was getting 6.7l with the conti's and I am getting 6.8l with the Michelins not much of a difference but could also be they are not yet broken in.
Noise seems about the same on the highway and I can't really speak to ware yet for the Michelins but expect them to be about the same as the Conti's. I was going to get the Conti's again but the Michelins were such a good deal it was worth a giving them a go, so far so good.

It's like trying to walk on ice with sneakers when the tire is cold. You never know when it won't brake and the ABS will keep kicking in, putting you at risk. After about 60-100 km, it performs well in dry weather.

I run them on 2 cars in extremely different platforms. On a ford transit custom which is driven every day, as well as a mitsubishi colt CZT which mostly sees track days and nurburgring trips. On the van i love the tyre for being as comfortable as it is on a very low profile with a lot of weight on it. I also notice almost no wear, with the tyre still being at almost 6mm after 30 000km.
On the colt czt i love it for being consistently grippy, in al conditions. Sure, it can overheat after a few very hard laps, but every UHP tyre does that.
Also have to give it points on looks, no other tyre looks this good.

I switched on the front form the original Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3. I knew that it is a better tyre but afraid to suffer high noise level. It was proven to be as quit as the GY but superior handling. I am driving a front wheel drive car which puts high pressure on the front axel. The Michelin is proving to handle it very well.

All our cars are pilot 5. These tyres are not that costly I got them on my Audi S4 and I drive it quickly. The confidence you get built up over a long time one knows give one the knowledge that the tyres will save your life one day when you have to do an emergency stop and that the tyres will fulfill its duty to come to a stop immediately and in control. I have used Michelin tyres all my life and if you work out four tyres over the tires life it will be pennies per mile. In the wet they perform very well and my S4 does not seem to roll in tight corners and bad conditions. The only thing I know and unless you experience it is all wide tyre cars no matter what tyres you have is aqua planning and deep snow and icey conditions the tyres will behave like any tyres. I have tried other tyres before until I came to the conclusion that I prefer Michelins to any other tyres. They grip like hell. This is a genuine review off using Michelins for a long long time. Our other cars are all Michelins. !
